Chapter 5- LIGHT
UNIT 2- RECTILINEAR PROPAGATION OF LIGHT, PINHOLE CAMERA
AND SHADOWS
Note: The given work has to be done in the fair Physics notebook.

Answer the following questions

Q1. Define the following terms:
a) Rectilinear propagation of light
b) Shadow
c) Umbra
d) Penumbra
e) Eclipse
Ans1.a) The property of light travelling in a straight line is called the
rectilinear propagation of light.
b) A dark patch formed behind an opaque body, when it is placed in
the path of light is called shadow.
c) A region of total darkness is called umbra. No ray of light enters in
the region.
d) A region of partial darkness which surrounds the umbra is called
penumbra. Some rays of light always reach this region and partially
illuminate it.
e) The shadow cast by the heavenly bodies on each other is called an
eclipse.
Q2. What is the principle of a pinhole camera? State three
characteristics of an image formed by a pinhole camera.
Ans2. A pinhole camera is based on the principle that light travels in
straight lines. Following are the characteristics of image formed in a
pinhole camera-
a) It is real, i.e. , it is formed on the screen.
b) It is inverted.
c) It can be smaller, bigger or of the same size as the object.
Q3. How is the image formed in a pinhole camera affected when(i)
the distance of screen from the pinhole increases, (ii) the distance of
the object from the pinhole increases?
Ans3. If the distance between pinhole camera and screen is
increased, the size of image will increase and the image gets less
bright as light spreads over a large area.
If the distance between pinhole and the object is increased, the size
of image will decrease and the image will become bright as the light
spreads over a small area.

Q4. State three conditions for the formation of shadow.

1. There must be a source of light.
2. There must be an opaque body to obstruct the path of light.
3. There must be an opaque screen to receive the shadow as it
cannot be formed in air.
Q5. Why is a total solar eclipse not very frequent?
Ans5. The total solar eclipse hardly lasts for five to ten minutes and is
a rare event because the shadow of the moon is very small. The
earth, while revolving round the sun, soon passes out of the shadow
region caused by the moon and many a time the shadow of the
moon does not reach the earth.
Q6. Why does a lunar eclipse last longer than a solar eclipse?
Ans6. The earth is fairly big body and its shadow can completely
cover the whole moon. It is for the same reason that lunar eclipse
lasts for two or more hours because the moon has to pass through a
very large shadow of the earth.
