Instructions

1. This paper consists of TEN (10) questions in section A and B.


2. Answer ALL questions from section A and TWO (2) questions from section B.
3. Each question of section A carries ten (10) marks and of section B carries FIFTEEN (15)
marks.
4. Mathematical tables and non-programmable calculators may be used.
5. Cellular phones are not allowed in the examination room.
6. Write your Examination number in each answer paper.

SECTION A (70 Marks)

1. (a) Use a non- programmable calculator to evaluate correctly to four decimal places the values of
the following.

4. (a) (i) The ends of a line segment are ( p - q, p + q ) and ( p + q, p – q ). Find the lenght of the

line segment, it’s gradient and the coodinates of it’s mid – point. (01 marks)
(ii) Find the coodinates of the foot of the perpendicular from A (-2, -4) to the line joining

B (0 , 2) and C ( -1, 4 ). (01 marks)

(b) Examine, whether the point ( 2, 3 ) lies outside, or inside the circle

(c) A person standing at the junction ( crossing ) of two straight paths represented by the
equations 2x – 3y = 4 and 3x + 4y – 5 = 0 wants to reach the path whose equation is
6x – 7y + 8 = 0 in the least time. Find the equation of the path that he should follow.

(d) Find the equation of the locus of the points which are equidistant from A (3 , -2 ) and
B ( -4 , 1 ). (02 marks)

5. (a) A wire of length 4 metres is cut into two pieces, and each piece is bent into a square. How
shoud this be done so that the two squares together have

(b) Find the equation of the graph of the type y = ax2 + bx + c which crosses the x – axis at the
points ( 1 , 0 ) and ( 4 , 0 ) and also passes through the point ( 3, -4 ). (02 marks)

7. (a) Minimise and maximise; Z = 3x + 5y, subject to the constraints

(b) A producer has 30 and 17 units of labour and capital respectively which he can use to
produce two types of goods, X and Y. To produce one unit of X, 2 units of labour and 3 units of
capital are required. Similarly, 3 units of labour and 1 unit of capital are required to produce one
unit of Y. If X and Y are priced at 100/- and 120/- per unit respectively, how should the producer
use his resources to maximise the total revenue? Solve the problems graphically.

(c) Juma made 900 tons and 600 tons of bricks at his houses H1 and H2 respectively. He plan to
build new houses at three sites, P, Q, and R. He expect to use 500 tones of brick at P, 600 tones
to brick at Q and 400 tones to brick at R. The transport cost is given bellow.
