DETERMINATION OF RESISTANCE OF A GIVEN WIRE BY USING METRE BRIDGE

AIM:
To find resistance of a given wire using a metre bridge.

APPARATUS REQURIED:

Metre bridge apparatus, known resistor or Resistance box, Galvanometer, jockey,

connecting wires, etc.

FORMULA:

Where,

R --- Known resistance

X ---- Unknown resistance

l ----- Length of a metre bridge wire from zero to a balancing point.

Theory:
Metre bridge apparatus is also known as a slide wire bridge. It is fixed on the
wooden block and consists of a long wire with a uniform cross-sectional area. It has
two gaps formed using thick metal strips to make the Whetstone’s bridge. It is an
instrument that works on the principle of Wheatstone bridge. It is used to determine
the unknown resistance of a conductor.
Circuit Diagram:

9. Note down the value of R and balancing length (l).

10. Change the value of resistance with the help of resistance box and repeat the
experiment for 4 or 5 values of the resistances.
Observations:

Length of given wire L =…….cm

Table for unknown resistance (X):

SI.no Resistance from resistance Balance length (l) cm (100-l) cm unknown resista-

ce X=(100-l)R/ l

Box (Ω)

Calculations:
Mean value of unknown resistance =................. (Ω)

Result:
The value of unknown resistance X = …….(Ω)

5. To avoid the error of parallax, the set square should be used to note the null point.
