Chapter 3
1. The difference between hearing and listening:
- Hearing: the process by which sound waves are received by the ear.
- Listening: the act of interpreting and evaluating what is being said.
2. Name at least four problems caused by ineffective listening: misunderstanding,
equipment breaks down from improper use, productivity declines, profit sag, sales
are lost, relationships are damaged, morale is lowered, rumors get started, and
health is harmed.
3. The two speech elements should a listener examine analytically are:
- Focus on the main idea
- Evaluate supports
4. We can encourage a speaker by giving your full attention, taking notes, leaning
slightly forward instead of slouching back to your seat, looking directly to the
speaker instead of at the floor, and letting your face show interest and animation.
5. When you evaluate we give positive comments first so that the speaker is not
deflated. When you give negative comments, couple them with positive
alternatives.
Chapter 4
1. An audience- centered speaker strives to understand the listeners so that he or she
can meet their needs and interest.
2. Analysis means finding out exactly who the listeners are and what they know.
Adaptation means sharping a speech to satisfy the listener’s particular needs and
interest.
3. The best source of information about the needs of listeners with disabilities is the
persons with disabilities themselves. Because they clearly know what
accommodations need to be made.
4. The approach that we should take if listeners have an unfavorable attitude toward
the speech goal is try to win the listener over our views or position and if it fails
just move them closer to our position.
5. The guidelines should be followed for speech to an audience that knows little or
nothing about the topic:
- Limit of your idea and time
- Use normal language or body language
- Repeat key point idea
- Use visual aid
- Give some examples like vivid examples.
