Demonstration Lesson

Duration- 15 minutes

Introduction

In this lesson, which can be delivered in 15 minutes, the student will be introduced to how to

warm up properly before playing a piece. and how to use dynamics as part of the warming up

session. The piece the student will be learning is Schumann’s ‘Melodie, Op. 68, no. 1’ (Album

for the Young). Finally the student will gain more confidence reading the notes of a piece and

understanding the dynamics of a piece.

Learning outcomes

● The student will learn how to play scales with dynamics.

● The student will learn how to play arpeggios in C major (hands separately with

dynamics).

● The student will be able to play the first four bars of the piece hands separately with

dynamics.

● The student should be able to play the first two bars hands together.

Materials

Printed sheets of scales and arpeggios and a printout of the score (Melodie, Op.68, no.1)
Procedure

Introduction and warming up (5 minutes) ● The student will sit comfortably with

correct posture at the piano.

● Teacher will ask the student how they

are getting along with practicing.

● Teacher will explain the plan of the

lesson.

● Student will play the scale of C major

hands separately ( 2 octaves)

● Teacher will introduce the use of

dynamics when playing scales, which

the student will then follow.

● Student will play arpeggios in C major

hands separately ( 1 octave)

● Student will use dynamics and play

the arpeggios again.

Playing the piece (8 minutes) ● The student will play the first four

bars of the piece hands separately.

● The student will play the first four

bars of the piece hands separately,


with dynamics.

● The student should be able to play the

first two bars of the piece hands

together.

Suggestion and Feedback (2 minutes) ● The student will ask any questions

related to what she learned during the

lesson.

● The teacher will give feedback.

● The teacher will allocate homework

for the student and suggest methods of

practicing.
