1. Which colored light bulb—red, orange, yellow, green, or violet—emits photons with (a)

the least energy and (20 points) (b) the greatest energy? (20 points)

Answer :

a) Red has the longest wavelength so it has the lowest energy of any color.

b) Violet (purple) has the shortest wavelength so it has the highest energy of any color.

Simple as that. So going from highest to lowest energy:

Red > Orange > Yellow > Green > Blue > Violet

2. Radiation of a given wavelength causes electrons to be emitted from the surface of metal 1
but not from the surface of metal 2. Why could this be? (a) Metal 1 has a greater work
function than metal 2 has. (b) Metal 1 has a smaller work function than metal 2 has. (c) The
energy of a photon striking metal 1 is greater than the energy ofa photon striking metal 2. (20
points)

Answer :

The most likely explanation is (b) Metal 1 has a smaller work function than metal 2 has. If
metal 1 has a smaller work function, it will be easier for radiation of a certain wavelength to
remove electrons from its surface compared to metal 2.
3. In the line spectrum of atomic hydrogen there is also a group of lines known as the Brackett
series. These lines are produced when electrons, excited to high energy levels, make
transitions to the n = 4 level. Determine (20 points) (a) the longest wavelength in this series
and (b) the wavelength that corresponds to the transition from ni = 6 to nf = 4 (20 points).
