MUSIC ON THE BRAIN

1 Many scientists study the human brain. Some of them are interested in the effects of music on the brain. A few years
ago, one group of researchers in Germany reported an interesting discovery. They were studying the brains of professional
musicians. These musicians’ brains seem to be different from the brains of other people.
2 Dr. Robert Zatorre of Montreal, Canada, is a brain researcher. He has studied the brain and music for more than 20
years. According to Dr. Zatorre, there are good reasons to study how we hear and play music. These activities affect many
different regions of the brain.

3 Each region of brain seems to have a certain purpose. For example, one part of your brain keeps you breathing. You
don’t have to think about it. Other parts help you do math or remember faces. Others affect how you move your body, and
music also affects many regions of the brain. This is because music concerns more than hearing. It also concerns emotion,
movement, memory, and more, so it makes many different parts of the brain become active. Dr. Zatorre says that music
gives scientists “a window to the brain”. Music lets them see the brain works at its highest levels.

4 Brain researchers sometimes use special machines to take pictures of a working brain. One of these machines helped the
researchers in Germany. They used it to look at the brains of a group of professional musicians. They compared their
brains to the brains of a group of other people. They asked everyone in the two groups to think about a famous piece of
music. No one listened to the music. They all just imagined it. While they did this, the researchers studied the activity in
their brains. In the brains of the musicians, the region for hearing was very active. The other people’s brains did not show
activity in this area. It meant that the musicians somehow heard the music inside their heads in a way that the other people
could not.

CULTURAL MEANINGS OF COLORS

1 Colors in nature have universal meanings. For example, trees and plants are green, so the color green often represents
life and nature. Blue, the color of the sky, oceans, and lakes, makes us think of air, water, and peace. Colors in the red
spectrum—yellow, orange, and red—are warm colors. Those may give us a feeling of warmth and comfort or feelings of
anger. Colors in the blue spectrum—colors such as blue, green, and purple—are cool colors. They often give a feeling of
calmness or sadness. These ideas about color are are very similar around the world. They have more or less the same
meanings for people.

2 Colors also have different meanings in different cultures. A color may represent good feelings in one culture but bad
feelings in another. For example, in the United States, white represents goodness. It is usually the color of a bride’s
wedding dress. However, in India, China, and Japan, white can mean death. Green is the color of dollar bills in the U.S.,
so green may make Americans think of money. But in China, green can represent a loss of respect. Different colors
sometimes represent the same idea in different cultures. In European cultures, purple is the color of royalty for kings and
queens. In Asia, yellow is the color of royalty. In addition, one color will have many different meanings within one
culture. For example, in North America, red often means stop or danger, but it also can represent love.

3 Most people do not realize how much colors affect them. They can affect how people think, feel, and act. We can
increase our understanding of ourselves and the world around us by learning about what colors can mean or represent in
different cultures.
