PHY100 TENTATIVE EXAM

TYPE A

INSTRUCTION: Attempt all the questions.

QUESTION 1
You are provided with a pendulum bob, a thread and stop watch according to figure 1.0. The bob
was suspended from the ceiling such that the pendulum bob touched the floor. The point of
suspension from the ceiling to the floor L was determined and kept constant throughout the
experiment.
The length of the pendulum was reduced with H =10cm as shown in figure 1.0. In this position,
the bob was displaced and the time t for 20 oscillations was recorded to be 2.5s
The experiment was repeated six more times with different values of H
Hence, determine the period T of oscillation.
Measure and record your values of H, t and T and Evaluate T2
Plot a graph of T2 against H, starting both axes from the origin (0,0)
i. Determine the slope S of the graph and the intercept I on the vertical axis.
ii. Deduce the value for `g` i.e. acceleration due to gravity.
iii. State two precautions you would have taken to ensure accurate results.
iv. Why is a spherical bob preferred to bobs of other shapes for use in the experiments?
v. Differentiate between oscillatory and rotational motions
vi. Explain how the period of oscillations of the pendulum of a clock may be affected by an
increase in temperature
vii. An oscillating pendulum bob of mass 2kg has an angular speed of 3.0rads-1. Calculate its
maximum kinetic energy if its amplitude is 5cm
viii. Why is it that the motion of a simple pendulum is said to be simple harmonic?
