INTRODUCTION

We are inspired from Swachh Bharat Mission. Nowadays technologies are getting smarter
day-by-day so, as to clean the environment we are designing a smart dustbin by using
Arduino. The main objective of the project is to design a smart dustbin which will help in
keeping our environment clean and also eco friendly. This smart dustbin management system
is built on the microcontroller based system having ultrasonic sensors on the dustbin. If
dustbin is not maintained than these can cause an unhealthy environment and can cause
pollute that affect our health. In this proposed technology we have designed a smart dustbin
using ARDUINO UNO, along with ultrasonic sensor, servo motor, and battery jumper wire.
The rate increasing population in our country has increasing rapidly and also we have
increase in garbage which have increased environmental issue. Dustbin is a container which
collects garbage’s or stores items which recyclable or non-recyclable, decompose and non
decompose. They are usually used in homes, office etc, but in case they are full no one is
there to clean it and the garbage are spilled out. The surrounding of a dustbin is also
conducive for increasing the pollution level. Air pollution due to a dustbin can produce
bacteria and virus which can produce life harmful diseases for human. Therefore, we have
designed a smart dustbin using ARDUINO UNO, ultrasonic sensor which will sense the item
to be thrown in the dustbin and open the lid with the help of the motor. It is an IOT based
project that will bring a new and smart way of cleanliness.
To design a “Smart Dustbin” which is an Ultrasonic Sensor enabled in bin which
automatically detects the garbage and set the code in the Arduino circuit board which help to
open and close after detect the garbage .

 Smart bin is built on a microcontroller based platform Arduino Uno board which is
interfaced with Ultrasonic sensor. And it’s connected with the servo motor .

Smart DUSTBIN
As the world is in a stage of up gradation, there is one stinking problem we have to deal with.
Garbage! In our daily life, we see the pictures of garbage bins being overfull and all the
garbage spills out. This leads to the number of diseases as large number of insects and
mosquitoes breed on it. A big challenge in the urban cities is solid waste management not
only in India but for most of the countries in the world. Hence, such a system has to be built
which can eradicate this problem or at least reduce it to the minimum level. The project gives
us one of the most efficient ways to keep our environment clean and green. The smart city
concept is still new in India, although it has received a lot of attention in few years when our
present Prime Minister gave the idea of building 100 smart cities throughout India. Now, with
the upcoming large number of smart cities, large numbers of responsibilities are also required
to be fulfilled. The prime need of a smart lifestyle begins with cleanliness and cleanliness
begins with dustbin. A society will get its waste dispatched properly only if the dustbins are
placed well and collected well.
Smart dustbin means when we go in front of dustbin it get open automatically due to use of
ultrasonic sensor, servo metro and arduino
The main problem in the current waste management system in most of the Indian cities is the
unhealthy status of dustbins. In this paper we have tried to upgrade the trivial but vital
component of the urban waste management system.

7
SCOPE OF INNOVATION

It will stop overflowing of dustbins around road side and localities as smart dustbin managed
in real time. Once these smart bin are implements on a large scale by replacing the traditional
bins, the waste can be quickly managed to its efficient level as its avoid unnecessary lumping
of wastes on roadside.
The problem of foul odour and manual control mobility calls for the future scope which
includes the odour control mechanism to get rid of foul smell of organic garbage. Also,
realising the requirement of an autonomous dustbin. GPS modulate can be implemented for
path planning combination with ultrasonic sensor for obstacle avoidance.

The main aim of this project is to reduce human resources and efforts along with the
enhancement of a smart city vision. We have often seen garbage spilling over from dustbins
on to streets and this was an issue that required immediate attention. The proverb
“Cleanliness is next to god and clean city is next to heaven” inspired us to conceptualized the
project.
Smart dustbin helps us to reduce the pollution. Many times garbage dustbin is overflow and
many animals like dog or rat enters inside or near the dustbin. This creates a bad scene. Also
some birds are also trying to take out garbage from dustbin. This project can avoid such
situations. And the message can be sent directly to the cleaning vehicle instead of the
contractor’s office.

Another purpose of this project is to make the purposed waste management system as cheep
as possible. The purpose of smart waste management system is mainly develop to make the
Dhaka city a better place to live, however it can be integrated with other cities waste
management plan. As the existing garbage management technique of Dhaka city is not
automated or software-based the government can apply the proposed garbage management
system the government can take necessary steps to improve garbage management system.

OBJECTIVES

10
DESCRIPTION
Smart Dustbin works on the principle of object detection using an ultrasonic sensor. The
ultrasonic sensor transmits sound waves. These waves get reflected whenever an object
comes into the vicinity of the sensor. This generates an electrical signal which is used to open
the dustbin lid.

Smart Bins help to create a cleaner, safer, more hygienic environment and enhanced
operational efficiency while reducing management costs, resources, and road-side emissions.
The Smart Bin is ideal for busy locations such as campuses, theme parks, airports, railway
stations, and shopping malls.
Smart Dustbin is integrated with some hardware components such as Arduino, NODEMCU,
Servo Motor, Ultrasonic sensors. These components help in opening the lid, on detection of
human hand and waste and also sending the notification in the form of LED.
It is an IOT based project that will bring a new and smart way of cleanliness. It is a decent
gadget to make your home clean, due to practically all offspring of home consistently
make it grimy and spread litter to a great extent by electronics, rappers and various other
things. Since the smart dustbin is additionally intriguing and children make fun with it so it
will help to maintain cleanliness in home.

The basic operation of the system. The fullness status of the bin is determined by calculating
the distance between the lid of the bin and the trash by using a sensor. A distance threshold
will be set according to the bin dimensions.

11
METODOLOGY

SMART DUSTBIN USING ARDUINO is an IOT based project. Here we are using arduino
for code execution, for sensing we used ultrasonic sensor which will open lid and wait for
few moment. It will bring drastic changes in tern of cleanliness with the help of technology.
Everything is getting with smart technology for the betterment of human being. So this help
in maintaining the environment clean with the help of technology. It is a sensor based dustbin
so it would be easy to access/use for any age group.
Our aim is also to make it cost effective so that many numbers of people can get the benefit
from this. And it should be usable to anyone and helpful for them. When the distance
measuring sensor indicates that the bin is full, then a microcontroller board will control a
GSM module to send SMS alert that contains bin ID and alert message to a predefined phone
number. The location of the bin is predefined by a sanitary worker who will identify the filled
bin by its ID which received by the SMS alert. The system will return to default operation
when the bin is emptied by the sanitary worker.

ARDUINO
Arduino is an open-source electronics platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software.
Arduino boards are able to read inputs- light on a sensor, a finger on a button, or a Twitter
message - and turn it into an output - activating a motor, turning on an LED, publishing
something online. You can tell your board what to do by sending a set of instructions to the
microcontroller on the board. To do so you use the Arduino programming language (based on
Wiring), and the Arduino Software (IDE), based on Processing.
Arduino is an open source, computer hardware and software company, project, and user
community that designs and manufactures microcontroller kits for building digital devices and
interactive objects that can sense and control objects in the physical world. The project's products
are distributed as open-source hardware and software, which are licensed under the GNU Lesser
General Public License (LGPL) or the GNU General Public License (GPL), permitting the
manufacture of Arduino boards and software distribution by anyone. Arduino boards are
available commercially in preassembled form, or as do-it-yourself kits. Arduino board designs
use a variety of microprocessors and controllers. The boards are equipped with sets of digital and
analog input/output (I/O) pins that may be interfaced to various expansion boards (shields) and
other circuits. The boards feature serial communications interfaces, including Universal Serial
Bus (USB) on some models, which are also used for loading programs from personal computers
Serial Bus (USB) on some models, which are also used for loading programs from personal
computers.

Arduino uno

13
(i) Power USB- Arduino board can be powered by using the USB cable from your computer.
All you need to do is connect the USB cable to the USB connection
(ii) Power (Barrel Jack)

Arduino boards can be powered directly from the AC mains power supply by connecting it to
the Barrel Jack.

(iii) Voltage Regulator

The function of the voltage regulator is to control the voltage given to the Arduino board and
stabilize the DC voltages used by the processor and other elements

Software used :- ARDUINO IDC

Each Arduino board has its own microcontroller . You can assume it as the brain of your
board. The main IC (integrated circuit) on the Arduino is slightly different from board to
board. The microcontrollers are usually of the ATMEL Company. You must know what IC
your board has before loading up a new program from the Arduino IDE.

IR Sensor is connected in dustbin. it is used to detect the level of dustbin where dustbin is full
or empty . with the help of sensor the system can segregate the waste collected in collection
point.

ULTRASONIC SENSOR
The HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor uses SONAR to determine the distance of an object just like the
bats do. It offers excellent non-contact range detection with high accuracy and stable readings in
an easy-to-use package from 2 cm to 400 cm or 1” to 13 feet. The operation is not affected by
sunlight or black material, although acoustically, soft materials like cloth can be difficult to
detect. It comes complete with ultrasonic transmitter and receiver module.
This sensor is used in to locate the distance between the smart dustbin and hand/object come
near to it. The principle behind finding distance of obstacle is sonar wave. It only
detects obstacle when Trigger pin receive high pulse for the period more than 10 us. When
this sensor verifies the presence of hand (obstacle) it starts to send eight cycles of ultrasonic
burst at 40 KHz and then it waits for reflected ultrasonic signal. Ultrasonic sensor module has
two drums. One of the drums is used for transmitting the pulse of ultrasonic and the second
drums are for receiving signal

ULTRASONIC SENSOR
SERVO MOTOR
There are lots of servo motors available in the market and each one has its own speciality and
applications. Most of the hobby Servo motors operates from 4.8V to 6.5V, the higher the
voltage higher the torque we can achieve, but most commonly they are operated at +5V.
Almost all hobby servo motors can rotate only from 0° to 180° due to their gear arrangement
so make sure you project can live with the half circle if no, you can prefer for a 0° to 360°
motor or modify the motor to make a full circle. The gears in the motors are easily subjected
to wear and tear, so if your application requires stronger and long running motors you can go
with metal gears or just stick with normal plastic gear.

Next comes the most important parameter, which is the torque at which the motor operates.
Again there are many choices here but the commonly available one is the 2.5kg/cm torque
which comes with the Towerpro SG90 Motor. This 2.5kg/cm torque means that the motor can
pull a weight of 2.5kg when it is suspended at a distance of 1cm. So if you suspend the load
at 0.5cm then the motor can pull a load of 5kg similarly if you suspend the load at 2cm then
can pull only 1.25. Based on the load which you use in the project you can select the motor
with proper torque. The below picture will illustrate the same.

Servo motor

15
The servo motor has some control circuits and a potentiometer (a variable resistor, aka pot)
connected to the output shaft. In the pot can be seen on the right side of the supply and service of
servo motor.

SWITCH
In electrical engineering, a switch is an electrical component that can disconnect or connect the
conducting path in an electrical circuit, interrupting the electric current or diverting it from one
conductor to another.
Here we using a simple switch which can help us to engage and disengage to power supply and
working of servo motor.

BATTERY
A power supply is responsible for providing a circuit with all the power it will need during
normal operation. It provides the circuit with a certain voltage and current. ...
For proper operation, we need to find a way to convert the voltage of our main supply (battery or
wall adapter) down to 5V.
A power supply is responsible for providing a circuit with all the power it will need during
normal operation. It provides the circuit with a certain voltage and current.

JUMPER WIRES
The term "jumper wire" simply refers to a conducting wire that establishes an electrical
connection between two points in a circuit. A jump wire is an electrical wire, or group of them in
a cable, with a connector or pin at each end, which is normally used to interconnect the
components of a breadboard or other prototype or test circuit, internally or with other equipment
or components, without soldering. The final step in the build process is to make the necessary
connections using long connecting wires as per the circuit diagram and securing these wires
so that they don’t hang around. All the wires from both the components i.e. Ultrasonic Sensor
and Servo Motor are connected to respective pins of Arduino. This finishes up the build
process of the Smart.

Why sensor dustbin?
Smart bin help to create to cleaner, safer, more hygienic environment and enhanced
operational efficiency while reducing management cost, resources, and rode side emissions.
The smart bins is ideal for busy location such as campuses, theme park, airport,
Railway station, and shopping malls.

The unique feature off this bin is that its motion sensor automatically open the lid as it detects
a movement around. This is a great future which allow you to throw the trash without having
to touch the bin. The lid closes on its own as you move away from the bin

The bin comes in 9-liter and 35- liter size with retainer clips on the sides to hold the garbage
bags in place. To keep the function steady , 2AA batteries are required which are not included
in the purchase. If you require opening the bin longer (for emptying out or other purpose )
you can use the provided button and can control the bins manually.

How do sensor bins work

In the simplest definition, bin sensors work in the way that they are located in your waste
bins. After that, these smart bin sensors notify and inform you and your waste truck drivers
about the fullness also the necessity of discharge of this waste bin.

Any other information about the product

This can shaped Sensor Dustbin automatically opens and closes by sensing movements and
with its cute shape like a pop can, no one will mind that it is a trash can and it would look
cool no matter where you put it in your home. Smart Dustbin works on the principle of object
detection using an ultrasonic sensor. A dustbin is a large container with a lid which people
put their rubbish in and which is usually kept outside their house.

Smart bins are an intelligent waste management system. They have wireless ultrasonic fill-
level sensors embedded inside which detect how full the bin is and then, through the IoT, this
data is sent to a cloud-based monitoring and analytics platform. A sensor is a device
that detects and responds to some type of input from the physical environment. The input can
be light, heat, motion, moisture, pressure or any number of other environmental phenomena.

21
RESULT
The dustbin is able to open the lid with the help of servo motor whenever it detects motion.
The ultrasonic sensor is giving the details about the waste present in the dustbin. The status of
the waste is transferred to the municipal authority whenever it is exceeding the threshold
value.

After wiring and attaching all the devices and setting up to the Smart Dustbin, now observeall
the important setup whether they are well connected or something missed. After connection
set up now next step is to submit/upload code in Arduino and supply power to the circuit.
When system is powered ON, Arduino keeps monitoring for any things that come near the
sensor at give range. When Ultrasonic sensor detect any object for example like hand or
others, here Arduino calculates its distance and if it less than a certain predefined value than
servo motor get activate first and with the support of the extended arm of the lid.

22
CONCLUSION
Here we are going to make an evolution changes toward cleanliness. The combination of
intelligent waste monitoring and trash compaction technologies, smart dustbins are
better and shoulders above traditional garbage dustbin. It is equipped with smart
devices like sensor Arduinoetc.Lid of the dustbin will automatically open when an
object comes near to the dustbin and after certain time period it will close the lid.

For social it will help toward health and hygiene, for business for we try to make it
affordable to many as many possible. So that normal people to rich people can take benefit
from it. Believe this will bring something changes in term of cleanliness as well
technology.

Hence, smart dustbin using arduino was design successfully. In this way people can dispose
of garbage without touching the dustbin and the lid also remains closed to avoid flies.
This project came in comfortable which a worthy elucidation for maintain green envoroment.
The proposed system is an attempt to improve current waste collection system in india for the
“Clean India Mission”.
