“Send me a man who reads!

T HERE is a hard core of individuals in every business and profession who know how
important it is to keep reading—everything they can. Recently we tried to find out precisely
who these men are.

We asked 100 very successful businessmen how many magazines, books, and
newspapers had they read in the past week. The answers totaled: magazines, 338; books, 53;
newspapers, 1,490.

Then we asked 100 men in the same age group whose salaries had never reached $7500 a
year. Their answers totaled: magazines, 229; books 28; newspapers, 1,177. The conclusion is
as clear as print:

Men who read more achieve more.

Businessmen are becoming sharply aware of the impact that serious reading can have on
both their careers and their characters. Our universities have been quick to recognize this
awareness.

Many of these are now offering courses in the Great Books. The men who attend these
courses learn beyond their specialties. Their worlds expand with new ideas. Their mental reach
lengthens. They learn to take advantage of the knowledge preserved by print on paper.

A significant portion of this knowledge is contained in the daily press. The best of our
newspapers are a vital source of instant information. They have united print, pictures and paper
to create a new, more exciting language—one that is fluently spoken by university scholars and
lurching subway readers alike.

Our great newspapers tell us what we are as a nation. That is why nine out of ten
Americans read at least one paper every day. It is why newspaper sales have increased 42 per
cent in the last 20 years.

And no less than 75 per cent of all American advertising is now in printed media. Print
sells.

Read whenever you can—while you wait for airplanes, haircuts, phone calls. You will be
the gainer.
