1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Group Introduction

The group conducting Project Outcome Problem Based Learning consists of 5

students in subject BDA 2052: Cad and Modeling. In the project, each group is needed to get
a minimum 15 components product, dismantle them and draw each and every part in the
product. In our case, this group chose an old Electric Centrifugal Water Pump obtain from
Pejabat Pembangunan Harta Bina (PPH) UTHM.

This group is named as group 6 (as the 6th group in the grouping order). The group
members are as shown in the figure below:

1.2 Objective

The project is conducted based on several objectives. These objectives determine so

the project does not vary from it and the goal of POPBL achievement. The project objectives
are as stated below:

o To draw components of Centrifugal Water Pump in AutoCAD® 2002.

All drawings must be drawn in AutoCAD, and in this case version 2002 since its
universality and ease. Other softwares such as SolidWorks® may not be used.

o To understand the functions and properties of a Centrifugal Water Pump.

The goal is to find how a Centrifugal Water Pump functions, no analysis need to
be made such as FEM (CAE). Only information on the pump is needed.

o To measure and evaluate a student’s skills in using AutoCAD®.

All students learnt how to use AutoCAD®. Thus, the project may evaluate how
far the students could use AutoCAD as one of evaluation requirements for the
subject.

o To deliver the report of this study to everyone in the section in terms of

presentation.
The report must then be presented in class to all classmates and lecturer. The
presentation trains the students for confidence and other communication skills.

1.3 Product Information

The Centrifugal Water Pump is a mechanical component that mainly designed to

transfer fluid from one place to another (through pressure change). A centrifugal pump is a
rotor dynamic pump that uses a rotating impeller to increase the pressure of a fluid.

The fluid enters the pump impeller along or near to the rotating axis and is accelerated
by the impeller, flowing radially outward into a diffuser or volute chamber, from where it
exits into the downstream piping system.

The pump uses the principle of conversion of the

kinetic energy of a flowing fluid (velocity pressure) into
static pressure. Rotation of the pump impeller
accelerates the fluid as it passes from the impeller eye
(centre) and outward through the impeller vanes to the
periphery. As the fluid exits the impeller, a proportion
of the fluid momentum is then converted to (static)
pressure. Energy conversion results in an increased

pressure on the downstream side of the pump, causing in a centrifugal water pump
flow.

1.6 Gantt Chart

The Gantt chart shows the timeline of the group’s work pace. However, some of the
tasks has to be postponed and lags in the timeline due to some unavoidable circumstances
(i.e. holidays and late laboratory reservation). The project Gantt chart is as shown below:

2.0 MEASUREMENT METHOD

2.1 Measurement method

There are 3 main measurement methods as been suggested to get the geometric
parameters of the components. The measurement method is ranked into is corresponding
accuracy, started with Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), Vernier caliper and ruler.

Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM)

A coordinate measuring machine (CMM)

works 3 axes form the machine's coordinate system.
The CMM uses a probe to measure points on a work
piece. Each point on the work piece is unique to the
machine's coordinate system. The CMM combines the
measured points to form a feature that can now be
related to all other. The advantages of a CMM are as
stated below:
o Precision and accuracy
o Simple operation
Figure 6: Coordinate Measuring
o General Quality Control Machine
o Process monitoring and control
o Tooling qualification
o Dimensional accuracy

However, there are limits to how a CMM could measure a part. The limitations would
be expensive, limited, time consuming, can only measure a single axis within a single
dimension; outside/inside diameter, height, depth, etc.

Vernier caliper

Vernier calipers are made to measure small

differences in length. It is a useful tool for measuring
parameters such as outer or inner diameters, length and
thickness. Vernier caliper could measure up to ±0.01
mm small. However, it is limited to only ±300 mm
long parts. Manual vernier calipers produce errors in
Figure 7: Digital vernier caliper
reading. Thus, we use digital vernier caliper that can be
borrowed from Metrology Laboratory, FKMP.

Ruler

Meter ruler could help measuring segments that

either CMM or vernier caliper could hardly measure.
However, since it produces much more errors than
vernier caliper most of its measurement is based on
Figure 8: Meter ruler
approximations only.

2.2 Initial Sketching

Initial sketching is made to make a rough view on how to draw the components in
AutoCAD. Thus, it has dimensions that can be taken with measuring equipments and shape
that is similar to the product. The initial sketches that have been made by the group members
are as shown below:

3.0 PROJECT DRAWING

The drawings are compiled after this page. It has been sorted into sequence from full
assembly drawing up till the last single component drawing.

3.1 Full Assembly Drawing

The full assembly drawing is numbered as CP 01.00.00 (A), where it is in the first
level and (A) means assembly. There are 3 views in the full assembly drawing that is
isometric view, side view and sliced isometric view.

3.2 Explode Drawing with B.O.M (Bill of Material)

Explode drawing of each subassemblies shows the bill of material of each

subassembly. The drawing is made in isometric view.

3.3 Single Components Drawing

Single components drawing does not include standard parts, such as bearing, screws
and nut. These parts have their own specifications (dimensions) in industries. Thus there are
11 other components that have their own drawing. The drawings are made in orthographic
(3rd angle view) since there are isometric view in the drawing as well as side, front and upper
view.

4.0 DISCUSSION AND RECOMMENDATION

4.1 Discussion

The modeling approach used in drawing the parts is 2D and 3D modeling. 2D

modeling is used when doing shapes or surfaces. Commands in AutoCAD for 2D modeling
includes line, arc, polygon edit, dimensioning, array, move, copy, trim, region and mirror.
There are more commands not included but it is useful for making the surface of a solid
before extruded into a primitive solid.
3D modeling is used when drawing or editing solids, usually in isometric view. UCS
command is often used to change the axis directions (x, y and z) to ease solid editing or solid
drawing. Commands used in 3D modeling includes solid editing, align, slice, extrude, union,
substract, revolve, solid profile and move. In 3D modeling, a primitive solid is edited (either
union or substracted) into desired shape according to the part geometry. All parts are drawn
in 3D (solid), thus solid modeling is important in this project.

4.2 Measurement Problems and Recommendations

Measurement problems occur when getting the part dimensions. Some parts are
dimensionally hard to measure, especially those that has tapers, filleted of angled shapes. The
problems occurred while measurement phase are as stated below:
o Standard parts are having complicated or too small geometries such as pic in
screws.
Recommendation: The shape for these components is referred to other similar
parts in books and catalog such as shaft.

lOMoARcPSD|17284456

BDA 2052: C AD AND MO DELING

FAC ULTY O F MEC HANIC AL ENG INEERING AND MANUFAC TURING

o Some of the subassemblies can not be totally decomposed (Motor and motor
housing). Thus, measurement for connected parts is hard to obtain.
Recommendation: Take dimension according to other components that are
assembled to circuit housing such as motor housing. Alignment for critical
parts is made according to motor housing. Dimension for non-critical parts are
estimated.

o Deformed shapes (plastic made parts) made it harder to measure and draw.
Recommendation: Draw as flat surface.

o Wedges and tapered parts are hard to be measured by caliper.

Recommendation: Measure using ruler

lOMoARcPSD|17284456

BDA 2052: C AD AND MO DELING

FAC ULTY O F MEC HANIC AL ENG INEERING AND MANUFAC TURING

o Holes for venting purpose are categorized as non-critical parts. Measuring the
coordinate and size for each hole is time consuming.
Recommendation: Shape alike the holes are drawn and command array is
applied when drawing.

o Angled and circular solid measurement is time consuming and is hardly conducted
either using CMM or vernier caliper.
Recommendation: Take the shape as a cone and substract according to angle.

o Magnet circuit winding only estimated and not measured properly due to its non-
uniform shape.
Recommendation: Estimate the shape to be torus

4.3 Drawing Problems and Recommendations

There are some parts related to difficulties in drawing. These parts are considered into
critical parts that need extra time in drawing and alignment. The outcome shapes are not
exactly the same as the real part, but estimated to be quite similar in acceptable tolerance.

o Spiral shaped chamber done by filleting is limited to only cylindrical shape only.
Recommendation: Draw separately spiral and discharge nozzle. Union after both
parts finished.

o Magnet internal shape cannot be measured and drawn.

Recommendation: Estimation to the closest shape done.

5.0 CONCLUSION

The conclusion is the main objective for the project has been achieved, that is to draw
centrifugal pump by using AutoCAD by means of reverse engineering. The students
dismantle a mechanical part and get their dimensions. After that, students draw the parts in
AutoCAD. Thus, since all the drawings have been finished, the project goal has been
achieved.
The pump is used to transfer fluid from one place to another. This is the main usage of
the pump and it uses rotational motion to increase pressure in the pump and transfer the fluid
through the discharge nozzle into a piping system.
The pump consists of 15 components that are divided into 4 sub assemblies. The parts
are measured by using digital vernier caliper, CMM and ruler. The parts are not totally
dismantled, thus measurement is hard to be accomplished. Several problems occur in the
project (either measuring or drawing) and students overcame most of it. Thus, the project in
the same way trains the students to overcome obstacles and solve them professionally.
