Princess Chelsea Electro-Pop Conventions Analysis

“I Love My Boyfriend”
GC1: Lyrics and Visual Narrative
• The video is performance and minorly
conceptual
• The singer is performing as herself and her
band, using children’s toys or items around
her home (except the guitars) to perform the
song
• The singer floats around in the different
roles, which is achieved using overlays, and
creates a mystical and ethereal aesthetic, also
due to the added smoke effects
• The singer never looks at the camera, which
makes the video appear surreal and detached
GC2: Genre Characteristics
• The genre of the song is electro-pop
• The bright colours (colour-pop) are
characteristics of the genre
• The use of a studio setting is
unconventional for this genre, but it
appears as a low budget solution
• The editing is slow-paced to match the
beat, and the characters appear to float
around with the visuals
• The protagonist is portrayed as the
victim of the narrative, and there is a

and Postmodernism narrative and conceptual element

playing instruments and allows for the
primary target audience of females ages 13-
25+ to personally identify (UGT) with the
artist
• A younger audience is also targeted through
the children’s toys being used as instruments
• The singer is conventionally attractive but not
sexualised and does not greatly appeal to the
male gaze (Mulvey)
• There is variation in the costumes and
hairstyle/makeup of each character which
broadens personal identification (UGT)
• The colouring is pastel and over-exposed to make
the visuals appear surreal
