本課程介紹羅馬從一個小小的共和城邦發展成龐大帝國的歷史。在長達 7 百
年的歷史中，貴族、平民與政治領袖既合作又鬥爭的關係是羅馬穩定或分裂
的最根本結構。羅馬依靠強大的軍隊與高明的外交手腕迅速擴張統治版圖。
課程概述
羅馬擴張，取得了廣大的土地與財富，一開始時有效減緩了羅馬內部的貧
富問題，但弔詭地，最終卻惡化了羅馬貧富階級的衝突，進而引發了一連
串的血腥內戰。羅馬共和體制最後便在一連串的內戰與獨裁體制中結束。
本課程討論以下主題：
1. 人民、貴族與政治領袖的關係
2. 羅馬發展成帝國的動機與羅馬成功的理由。

本課程講述羅馬共和結束後到西元五世紀末的羅馬歷史。本課程討論以下主
題。首先是羅馬皇帝體制的發展與演變，其次是羅馬社會各個面向，包括家

庭、階級、經濟、宗教、種族與文化等，最後則是關於羅馬帝國衰亡或轉變的
辯論。
研習本課程的學生應能了解在古代科技條件的限制下羅馬統治龐大帝國在
各個歷史階段遭遇的問題與解決方式，並與其他社會比較。其次，學生應能
學習目標
夠比較古羅馬社會生活與其他社會的相似與不同之處。最後，學生應能夠掌
握羅馬帝國衰亡或轉變的辯論背後的史觀。
