Subject: Shielded Metal Arc Work

Grade Level: Grade 8

Objective: Select and classify hand tools and equipment (measuring, cutting,
driving, and holding tools)

Learning across curriculum:

1) Math - Measurement and Geometry: Students will apply their understanding of

measurement and geometry concepts when selecting and using measuring tools in
Shielded Metal Arc Work.

2) Science - Forces and Motion: Students will explore how the different hand tools
and equipment in Shielded Metal Arc Work are used to apply force and create
motion.

3) Technology and Livelihood Education - Industrial Arts: Students will connect the
use of hand tools and equipment in Shielded Metal Arc Work with the skills and
knowledge taught in Industrial Arts.

ELICIT:

Teaching Strategy: K-W-L Chart

Instructional Materials: Chart paper, markers

Anecdote 1: Share a story about a Filipino welder who used his skills in Shielded
Metal Arc Work to build a bridge in their community.

Anecdote 2: Share a personal experience of using hand tools and equipment for a
DIY project.

ENGAGE:
Teaching Strategy: Cooperative Learning

Instructional Materials: Hand tools and equipment samples

1) Idea: Divide the students into small groups and provide them with different hand
tools and equipment samples. Ask them to discuss and classify the tools based on
their functions (measuring, cutting, driving, holding).

2) Idea: Conduct a role-playing activity where students act as workers in a fabrication

shop. They will be given different tasks that require the use of specific hand tools
and equipment. The students will have to select and use the appropriate tools for
each task.

EXPLORE:

Activity 1: Tool Classification Relay Race

Teaching Strategy: Cooperative Learning

Materials: Hand tools and equipment samples, cones or markers

Significance: This activity will allow students to practice their understanding of tool
classification and enhance their teamwork skills.

Instructions:

1) Set up a relay race course with cones or markers.

2) Divide the class into teams and assign each team a starting point.

3) Place different hand tools and equipment samples at various points along the
course.

4) Each team member will run to a tool, pick it up, and classify it (measuring, cutting,
driving, holding) before returning to their team.

5) The next team member will continue the race until all tools are classified.
Rubric:

- Correct classification: 5 pts

- Incorrect classification: 0 pts

Assessment Questions:

1) How do you classify a measuring tool?

2) Give an example of a cutting tool.

3) What is the function of a driving tool?

Activity 2: Tool Selection Challenge

Teaching Strategy: Problem-Based Learning

Materials: Hand tools and equipment samples, task cards

Significance: This activity will challenge students to apply their knowledge of hand
tools and equipment in real-life scenarios.

Instructions:

1) Provide each student or group with a set of task cards that describe different
situations or tasks.

2) Students will select and justify the appropriate hand tools and equipment for each
task based on their functions.

3) Students will present their choices and explanations to the class for discussion.

Rubric:

- Correct tool selection and justification: 5 pts

- Incorrect tool selection or lack of justification: 0 pts

Assessment Questions:

1) What hand tool would you use to measure the length of a metal rod accurately?

2) Which tool would you select to cut a thick metal plate?

3) Explain why a driving tool is necessary in Shielded Metal Arc Work.

EXPLAIN:

Teaching Strategy: Lecture and Discussion

Explain the concept of hand tools and equipment and their functions in Shielded
Metal Arc Work. Use visual aids, real examples, and encourage student participation
through questions and discussions.

ELABORATE:

Teaching Strategy: Project-Based Learning

Task 1: Design a Workshop Layout

Task 2: Create a Tool Inventory

Provide students with a scenario where they have to design a workshop layout for a
fabrication shop. They will have to consider the different hand tools and equipment
needed, their functions, and the optimal arrangement of the workspace. Students will
also create a tool inventory, categorizing and listing the tools based on their
functions.

EVALUATE:

Teaching Strategy: Inquiry-Based Learning

Assessment Questions:

1) How would you classify a hand tool used for cutting metal?

2) Explain the function of a measuring tool in Shielded Metal Arc Work.

3) Give an example of a driving tool and describe its purpose in welding.

EXTEND:

Teaching Strategy: Experiential Learning

Provide students with opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills in Shielded
Metal Arc Work in real-life situations. For example, encourage them to participate in
community projects that involve welding or offer internships in fabrication shops.

Assignment:

1) Assignment Overview: Research and Presentation

Assignment Question: Research and present on the different types of hand tools
and equipment used in Shielded Metal Arc Work, their functions, and proper usage.

2) Assignment Overview: Tool Selection Task

Assignment Question: Choose a specific welding task and create a step-by-step

guide on the proper selection and use of hand tools and equipment for that task.
