INTRODUCTION
Airways serve as vital gateways for city development, ensuring
connectivity across regions and nations. International airports,
crucial for city sustenance, contribute to global recognition and
cultural representation. Offering swift transportation for goods
and travelers, air travel overcomes geographical barriers like
seas, mountains, and rivers. Airports play a pivotal role in
economic growth, fostering international tourism, and creating
large concourses that reflect a city's allure. Beyond functionality,
airport design becomes a unique expression of a country's
heritage, reputation, and culture, engaging passengers and
influencing their travel experience. The airport, more than a
check-in/check-out point, encapsulates the journey's essence,
making it a compelling space for all, from young children to
business travelers. The 24/7 air-conditioned hub emerges as a
planned city within itself, attracting not only tourists but also
driving the city's growth in trade and the IT industry

LOCATION
 Location: Parandur, Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, India
 Official Name: New Chennai Greenfield International Airport
 Owner: Airports Authority of India
 Type: Public
 Status: Under Construction
 Operator: Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation
(TIDCO)
 Serves: Chennai Metropolitan Area

GLOBAL INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTURE 3

FEASIBILITY OF THE STUDY…
• The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Ltd
(TIDCO) sought land for a new airport due to increased
passenger and freight traffic. The AAI chose Parandur
for the new airport because it is located 60 km from the
city and 70 km from the present Chennai International
Airport. This airport is expected to cost over Rs 20,000
crore and will have 2 runways, a freight terminal,
taxiways, terminal buildings, and a variety of other
amenities.

WHAT IS AIRPORT…?
SCOPE…

An airport is a comprehensive  Current Airport Congestion: The existing Meenambakkam airport in Chennai is the sixth
infrastructure comprising runways busiest in India, handling around 2.2 crore passengers annually, with 400 daily aircraft
movements.

its location in the heart of the city, further growth is limited.
cater to passenger needs.
 Anticipated Saturation: The expansion at Meenambakkam will likely reach saturation
after completion, necessitating the consideration of additional airport facilities.
 Parandur Airport Opportunity: The proposed Parandur airport offers a solution with two
larger runways capable of handling bigger aircraft, potentially accommodating over 600
passengers.
 Traffic Division Uncertainty: While the need for a new airport is acknowledged, the
division of air traffic between Meenambakkam and Parandur is yet to be determined.
Officials at Meenambakkam and Tidco mention that this decision will be discussed at a
later stage, after the completion of the detailed project report (DPR).
 Long-Term Growth Potential: The establishment of Parandur airport could provide a
substantial boost to Chennai's aviation capacity, offering a strategic solution to the city's
growing air traffic demands.

 Main Focus on Terminal Building: While the project encompasses diverse spaces like cargo
terminals, fire stations, etc., the primary emphasis will be on the terminal building and its
approaches.
 Spatial Accommodation: The challenge of accommodating a wide range of spaces within
the airport terminal building, considering the diverse needs of passengers and various
services.
 Detail Design Concerns: The primary focus on overall site planning doesn't diminish the
importance of detailed design considerations, particularly concerning the terminal building
and its immediate surroundings.

EPOXY RESIN_ FLOORING FOR AIRPORT TERMINALS
SPACIAL TOPIC;
 Epoxy is a synthetic resin that can be applied to concrete to create a smooth,
seamless surface. It’s often used in heavy-traffic areas because it’s resistant to
wear and tear.
 Epoxy flooring is a versatile solution for airport terminals, meeting various
demands with its durability and functionality.
 Designed to withstand high foot traffic, it offers a hard-wearing surface that is
easy to clean and maintain.
 Its slip-resistant properties enhance safety in busy areas like concourses and
boarding lounges.
 Additionally, in maintenance areas, Epoxy can handle chemical and fluid spillages
without compromising the floor.
 This makes it a smart choice for airports, providing a safe, durable, and
aesthetically pleasing flooring solution for the diverse needs of passengers and
airport operations.
