Lesson Plan in Science

Grade 9

I. Lesson Objectives
a. Cognitive- Identify the Electronic Configuration of the given elements.
b. Affective- Differentiate the three principles of Orbital diagram.
c. Psychomotor- Illustrate the Orbital diagram.
II. Subject Matter
1. Topic: Electronic Configuration
2. Subtopic: Orbital diagram
Orbital notation/spdf notation
3. Reference: Book
4. Title: Interactive Chemistry
5. Authors: Aurora A. Franco, et.al
6. Instructional Materials: Charts and tables
III. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer- (Our Father) The teacher will call one student to lead the opening
prayer.
2. Attendance- Students will raise their hand as the teacher calls their name.
3. Drill- Let the students give the meaning of the following:
a. O
b. H
c. He
d. C
e. Rn
4. Review- Ask the students what have been discussed yesterday. Call on student
to recite.
B. Lesson Proper
1. Motivation
The mother was hospitalized for 3 days. What do you think she needs?
2. Presentation (Inquiry Model)
Syntax:
a. Present a question
We need to know the number of electrons of the elements for our next
topic Electronic Configuration. Now how many electrons are there in oxygen?
b. Formulate hypothesis
Electronic Configuration is the orderly distribution of the electrons among
the orbital of an atom.
c. Gather data
Let the students read the book Interactive Chemistry pages 170-174
Electronic Configuration.
d. Analysis data
In Electronic Configuration there are two ways to distribute the electrons.
First is the spdf or orbital notation and the second is orbital diagram.
In spdf notation we need to follow the arrangement of Electronic
Distribution Mnemonics in our periodic table. But there is an easy way to
memorize or do it.

1s Note:

2s 2p s< 2
3s 3p 3d p< 6
4s 4p 4d 4f d< 10
5s 5p 5d 5f
f< 14
6s 6p 6d 6f
For example:

Element Total Electrons spdf notation

Oxygen 8 1s2 2s2 2p4

The next one is Orbital Diagram. Before doing it you must know the three
principles. First one is the Aufbau Principle, orbital of the lowest energy are filled
first. Second is Pauli Exclusion Principle, no two electrons in an atom have the
same four quantum numbers. Last is the Hund’s Rule, multiple orbital of the same
energy. One in each before they double up.

For example: Oxygen

2p4
2s2
1s2
3. Activities
Write the spdf notation of the given elements.
1. Oxygen (8O)
2. Hydrogen (1H)
3. Boron (5B)
4. Magnesium (12Mg)
5. Flourine (9Fl)
4. Generalization
Electronic Configuration is the distribution of electrons among the
orbital of an atom.
5. Application
Illustrate the orbital diagram of the given elements.
1. Oxygen (8O)
2. Hydrogen (1H)
3. Boron (5B)
4. Magnesium (12Mg)
5. Flourine (9Fl)
IV. Evaluation
Complete the following.

Elements Total Electrons Orbital diagram spdf notation

Silicon (Si) 14
Beryllium (Be)
Nitrogen (N) 1s2 2s2 2p3
Lithium (Li) 3 1s2 2s1
Sodium (Na) 11
