Contraindications • 2nd or 3rd degree atrioventricular block
• Decompensated cardiac failure
• Severe bradycardia
• Sick-sinus syndrome (without pacemaker)
• Untreated phaeochromocytoma
• Severe peripheral arterial disease
• Cardiogenic shock
• Allergic disorders
Adverse reactions • Significant: Bradycardia, atrioventricular
block, hypotension
• Cardiac disorders: dyspnoea, pulmonary
oedema, palpitations
• Ear and labyrinth disorders: tinnitus
• Eye disorders: blurred vision, visual
disturbances
• Gastrointestinal disorders: nausea,
vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation,
flatulence, dry mouth, heartburn
• General disorders and administration site
conditions: fatigue
• Immune system disorders: psoriasis
• Metabolism and nutrition disorders:
peripheral oedema
• Musculoskeletal and connective tissue
disorders: musculoskeletal pain

Use in pregnancy and lactation Use in pregnancy


• The beta adrenergic blocking agents may
cause bradycardia in the fetus and newborn
infant. These drugs should only be given
after weighing the needs of the mother
against the risk to the fetus during the final
part of pregnancy and parturition.
• Animal studies have not demonstrated any
adverse maternal or fetus effects except for
high doses in the rabbit whereby slight
reduction of litter size and slightly higher
value of fetal loss were demonstrated.
• Clinical suggests that in cases where its use
is considered to be essential.
• Metoprolol may be administered during
pregnancy.

Use in Lactation
• Metoprolol is excreted in human breast milk.
• Beta blockers taken by the mother may
cause side effects such as bradycardia in
the breast-fed infant even the doses used
are in recommended range.
• Metoprolol only need be discontinued during
lactation if the infant’s hepatic function is
severely impaired.
