1. Introduction The Condition of Tidal Flood

Several areas on the north coast of Central Java experienced flooding
and tidal disasters. Among them are Wonokerto Sub-Regency,
a Coastal Region in Pekalongan Regency.
Previously, most of area were an irrigated agricultural area, which the
water is supplied by Pesantren Klethak’s weir.

The objectives of this study were

- to determine the alignment of the embankment to hold seawater,
- to determine the protected areas for settlements and agriculture,
- to determine the current irrigation and drainage system,
- to determine the longitudinal long storage as retention basin,
- to simulate the pump capacity.

Planning and implementation of Flood and Tidal Pekalongan

To the land area
counter measures are carried out to overcome the
problems.

Some principles dealing with floods and tidal are:

- Closing the sea water flow into the drainage system and 5
small rivers: Semut Canal, Traterbang, Mrican, Pekuncen,
Pesanggrahan. To the sea area
- Embankment and Long Storage to Hold
Seawater with 5.2 km Length
- Arrangement of polder drainage system is holding back
tidal sea water and controlling floods due to rain
- The Polder system requires an increased water storage in
canals and retention ponds, also pump capacity

Embankment and Long Storage to

Hold Seawater with 5.2 km Length

The Ministry of Public Works and Housing, through BBWS

Pemali Juwana, built an embankment and long storage with
a width of 30 m and a length of 5.2 km

It is the procurement of pumps for Wonokerto system (14

m3/s = 7 x 2 m3/s). The pump is divided into 3 placement
locations:
- Silempeng Pump to serve Semut River sub-systems,
- Mrican Pump to serve Mrican and Traterbang River sub-
system, and
- Sengkarang Pump to serve Pekuncen and Pesanggrahan
River sub-systems. Those pumping stations are connected to
long storage.

3.1 Layout of Irrigation

and Drainage System

Previously, The canal system irrigated agricultural

areas in Wonokerto. After more than 50%

area was inundated by tidal floods, the

agricultural area could not work due to

puddles of water from the sea.

3.2 Catchment Area and Agriculture

No Name of CA CA (Ha) Explanation
1 Silempeng 721 Agriculture, separated
2 Semut 254 Agriculture
3 Traterbang 543 Agriculture
4 Mrican 410 Ship Parking, Embankment
5 Pekuncen 271 Embankment
6 Pesanggrahan 311 Embankment, Yard

The total area is 1795 Ha (excluding 721 Ha Silempeng area), of which 60%
area was originally agricultural. By treating the area with polder system,
agricultural areas and irrigation system can be revitalized.

3.3 Manage water elevation to Revitalize Agricultur Area

The pump capacity planned to handle floods and
tidal in Wonokerto, Pekalongan, with 14m3/sec
total is distributed into 3 locations:
A. Silempeng Pump to serve Semut River and B- Mrican
C- Sengkarang
Irrigation systems ,
A - Silempeng
B. Mrican Pump to serve Mrican and Traterbang
River and Irrigation system
C. Sengkarang Pump to serve Pekuncen and
Pesanggrahan River and Irrigation sub-systems.
Those pumping stations are connected to long
storage.
A. The West Wonokerto, Silempeng pump station, with a 4 m3/s capacity, is
located at eastern of tidal embankment and pumped into Silempeng and Sragi
Baru River. Covering West Wanakerto Agriculture Area
15

B. Mrican Pump Station with 6 m3/s capacity, is located at Mrican River estuary,
Covering Traterbang, Mrican, Pekuncen Agriculture Area
16

C. The East Wonokerto pump station, with a 4 m3/s capacity, is

located at eastern of tidal embankment and pumped into Sengkarang
River. Covering Pesanggrahan Agriculture Area
17 4. Conclusion
• Wonokerto area which experienced flooding and rob has irrigation and drainage
System. Irrigation water comes from the weir at Pesantren Klethak
• After sea dike is made, Wonokerto catchment area has an area of 1795 Ha,
which about 60% is an agricultural area.
• After having a sea dike, flood discharge is controlled by retention ponds, long
storage and pump systems.
• Based on the pump simulation, it requires a water reservoir of 68.6 Ha, a pump
of 14 m3/second, with elevation fluctuations from -0.5 m to +1.5 m
• To cover the Agriculture
\ and Settlement Land Area, Pumps place at 3 points:
Silempeng pump house with 4 m3/second, Mrica with 6 m3/second and
Sengkarang with 4 m3/second. Those three pumps are connected to a 5.2 km
sea dike and water long-storage.
• Recommendation:
→ To revitalize Agriculture, Fishing pond & existing settlement in South Area
→ To Conserve & Fishing in North area
