QUESTION 1 [25 MARKS]

Figure 1 shows a simple system to lift a heavy load. The dimensions a = 3.6 m and b = 1.2
m. The mass of the bar and counterweight is 45000 g, and their weight W acts at the point
as shown. The mass of the load being lifted is your 5 digits of ID number (g).

(a) If the load is just above the ground, determine the vertical force the person must
exert to support the system.
[15 Marks]
(b) If the load is 1 m above the ground, determine the vertical force the person must
exert to support the system.

QUESTION 2 [25 MARKS]

Figure 2 shows a simple beam supported by support X at A and support Y at B. The beam
carries its self-weight of your 5 digits of ID number (g) and inclined load of 400 N at the
left end.

(a) Determine the reaction at support A and B of the beam.

[15 Marks]
(b) Determine the sum of the moments about B.

QUESTION 4 [25 MARKS]

A particle has a speed v = 12 m/s and passes the 30° position as shown in Figure 4. The
coefficient of kinetic friction between the particle and the vertical plane track is 𝜇k =0.25.
A mass of particle is your 5 digits of ID number (g).

(a) Determine the magnitude of the total force exerted by the track on the particle.
[15 Marks]

(b) Determine the deceleration of the particle.
