QUESTION 1 [35 MARKS]

a) Figure 1 shows three cables with force F1, F2 and F3 attached to the metal rod on the wall.
The magnitude of force in cables F1 and F2 are 12 kN and 10 kN respectievely. Assume all
cables are in tension and are in equilibrium conditions, determine the magnitude of force
F3 and its coordinate direction angles α3, β3 and γ3 if the resultant force is FR = {9j} kN.

b) Figure 2 shows three metal rods with force F1, F2 and F3 attached to the ball-and-socket
joint on the ground. The magnitude of force in rods F1 and F2 are 10 kN and 8 kN
respectievely. Assume all rods are in equilibrium conditions, determine the magnitude and
coordinate direction angles of the resultant force if magnitude of force F3 is F3 = 9 kN and
θ = 30 ̊ and ϕ = 45 ̊ respectively.

QUESTION 2 [35 MARKS]

Figure 3 shows the hot air balloon being secured by three ropes AB, AC & AD on the ground
before taking off for the rides over the skies of Cappadocia, Turkey.

a) Determine the tension of ropes AB, AC & AD when the burners inject a flame, heating
the air within the balloon envelope, giving a vertical force of 1.8 kN and elevating the
balloon to the height H =17 m from the ground. Assume all ropes are in tension and are
in equilibrium conditions.
[24 Marks]
[CO1, PO1, C4]

b) The burners that inject a flame into the balloon envelope are fueled by propane, a
liquefied gas stored in pressure vessels. After 3 hours of securing from the ground, the
propane slowly runs out of gas that leaves the balloon with the vertical force of 800 N.
If all ropes AB, AC & AD are in equilibrium, suggest the new elevation H from the
ground given that the angle θ between rope AC and AD within 50° < 𝜃𝜃 < 60°.

shown in Figure 4. If the distance from crane boom at point O to location A is
x = 25 m, calculate the moment and the crane boom angle θ so that it makes the
maximum moment about point O.
