SECTION B [25 MARKS] – ANSWER ANY ONE (1) QUESTION

QUESTION 4 [25 MARKS]

(a) The assembly as shown in Figure 4(a) consists of two posts AD and CF made of A-36
steel and having a cross-sectional area of 1000 mm2, and a 2014-T6 aluminium post BE
having a cross-sectional area of 1500 mm2. If a central load of 400 kN is applied to the
rigid cap, determine the normal stress in each post. There is a small gap of 0.1 mm
between the post BE and the rigid member ABC.

(b) The turbine as shown in Figure 4(b) develops 150 kW of power, which is transmitted
to the gears such that both C and D receive an equal amount. If the rotation of the 100
mm diameter A-36 steel shaft is ω = 500 rev/min, determine the absolute maximum
shear stress in the shaft and the rotation of end E of the shaft relative to B. The journal
bearing at E allows the shaft to turn freely about its axis.

(a) The assembly consists of three titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) rods and a rigid bar AC as shown
in Figure 5(a). The cross-sectional area of each rod is given in the figure. If a force of
30 kN is applied to the ring F, determine the horizontal displacement of point F.
