1. How would you define research on English literature in relation with your
research proposal?
Answer : The study of English literature is the systematic and detailed study of
literary works originating in England or written in English. This study involves the
analysis and critical interpretation of literary texts such as novels, poetry, plays or
other prose. The aim of this research is to examine the meaning, themes, structure,
style and historical context of literary works in English and to understand their
influence and contribution to the wider development of literature and culture. A
research proposal may also include the purpose, significance, and benefit of the
English literature research being presented.
For example: The purpose of this research is to analyze the role of women in
Victorian English novels and to understand how the portrayal of women in literature
reflects the social and cultural context of the period. This research provides a deeper
understanding of the role of women in 19th century English literature and helps to
understand the social changes of the era.
The importance of this study is that it is important to understand the role of women in
English literature and how their representation can affect gender perception and
identity. This research can also provide a new perspective to understand the
development of English literature and lay the foundation for wider research and
literary studies.
The benefits of this research include increasing our understanding of English
literature, its historical social context, and the representation of women in literature.
The results of this study can be used as a reference source for scholars, researchers
and literary activists in developing their thinking and understanding of English
literature.
2. Please, explain why background of the study is very important when writing
research proposal?
Answer : The research background is very important in a research proposal as it
serves as a foundation that establishes the need, relevance and importance of the
research. Here are some reasons why the research background is essential when
writing a proposal:
Indication of the need for the research:
The research background indicates the reason why the research is needed. It means
identifying information or problems that are yet to be discovered in that field of study.
Clearly explaining the need for the research makes the proposal more interesting and
can help the reader see the importance of the proposed research.
Addresses the importance of the research:
The research background helps explain the relevance of the research to the broader
context. Understanding the literature allows researchers to show how their research
contributes to existing understanding or complements existing knowledge. When the
relationship between the proposed research and previous related research is revealed,
the proposal gains legitimacy and relevance.
The essence of knowledge gaps:
Background research can help identify knowledge gaps in a particular research area.
3. Explain what the different and similarity between concept and theory in
research on English literature!
Answer : In English literature research, concepts and theories are two different but
often interrelated things. Here are the differences and similarities between concepts
and theories in English literature research:
Differences between concept and theory
1. Concept:
- A concept is a basic or abstract idea about something to be researched or studied in
literary research. Concepts can be themes, characteristics, ideas, or other important
elements found in literary works.
- Concepts are usually broader and do not have strict boundaries. This allows
researchers to have varying interpretations of how the concept is applied in a
particular literary work.
2. Theory:
- Theory is a more organized and structured conceptual framework that helps
researchers understand, analyze, and interpret the data they find in literary research.
- Theories usually have a specific philosophical, epistemological, or methodological
foundation that provides a foundation for the research approach.
- Theories can help explain cause-and-effect relationships or predict phenomena in
literature and provide a guide for researchers to ask relevant research questions.
