Short Term Course: Effective Curriculum Development

Event Report

IQAC in association with NITTTR Chandigarh organised a short term course on Effective
Curriculum Development from 12th-16th Dec 2022.
During the sessions, Dr. A.B. Gupta introduced himself and all the other renowned speakers. He
briefed about the various departments and labs of NITTTR Chandigarh, research facilities,
educational facilities and the importance of curriculum design and methods of implementation.
First session of day 1 was taken by Dr. A. B. Gupta himself and he explained various stages of
curriculum, difference between syllabus and curriculum, their need and analysis. Program
outcomes at degree level and diploma level differ but the base and outcome is same i.e. lifelong
learning of student in a particular course.
Day 2 included the sessions on effective curriculum implementation i.e. putting into practise the
course of study, syllabus and subjects. Steps were discussed in detail related to it. Discussion was
also held on instructional strategies and maxims of teaching including known to unknown,
simple to complex, and concrete to abstract. Problem based learnings, principles of active
learning, individual difference, well defined outcomes were discussed in detail all related to
student centric approach. Last session of the day was taken over by Dr. Sanjv Gupta on
Education 4.0 and Industry Expectation. It was an interactive session for all nodal centres
wherein the practices and course related to industry interface were discussed in detail and how
we need to make our students ready for industry based on new technology, expectations of
employer and changing trends.
Day 3 was related to project work-its planning and execution step by step by Dr. Rajesh Mehra
who explained the importance of Plan Do Check Act (PDCA). He suggested to improve the
quality of management system with and an equal weightage to three components namely: Scope,
Time and Cost. Knowledge has to be outcome based and he very well explained it with an
example of PhD degree, Guide and scholar. Dr. P.K. Tulsi enlightened us about the Bloom
Taxonomy that we are using in our Question Papers and how they can be easily mapped with
questions asked. One learning outcome can be related to other and this she explained with
Psychomotor domains. Dr. Anil Kumar taught us about the assessment techniques that are direct
and indirect both. When evaluation should be done and how rubrics are related to it was
discussed in detail with all nodal centres.
Day 4 included the outcome based curriculum design and implementation, innovative practices
for skill development was discussed by Dr. G. S. Sethi where he advised about the content
writing and using minimum words to explain the whole concept i.e. quality of writing, quality of
work we do using innovative and creative methods. He revealed the importance soft skills by
showing examples form newspaper articles. Dr. S.K. Gupta in last session again deliberated the
talk on industry institute interaction, how often it should be and how can we make our students
ready for industry, real time issues in industry and how to tackle that calmly, job ready at the end
of programme. Outcome based curriculum should be designed and students to be assessed
accordingly.
2 sessions were included in day 5 related to norms and standards of various resources for
technical resources we need to follow that included no of students to teacher ratio in class, lab
facilities, experiments conducted etc. problem based learning was the last session of this STC
and indeed it was a knowledgeable to be a part of it.
