ASSIGNMENT- II
1. A child has some marbles in a box. If the marbles are grouped
in sevens, there will be five left over; if they are grouped in
elevens, there will be six left over; if they are grouped in
thirteens, eight will be left over. Determine the least number of
marbles in the box.
2. Solve the linear system 7𝑥 − 11𝑦 ≡ 12(𝑚𝑜𝑑 18); 11𝑥 −
12𝑦 ≡ 2(𝑚𝑜𝑑 18).
3. Let 𝑝 be a prime and 𝑎 any integer such that 𝑝 ∤ 𝑎. Then 𝑎𝑝−2
is an inverse of 𝑎 𝑚𝑜𝑑𝑢𝑙𝑜 𝑝.
4. A positive integer 𝑛 ≥ 2 is a prime if and only if (𝑛 − 2)! ≡
1(𝑚𝑜𝑑 𝑛).
5. Using Euler’s theorem, find the ones digit in the decimal value
of 176666 .
6. Show that 𝜙(22𝑘+1 ) is a square.
7. Let 𝑛 = 2𝑝−1 (2𝑝 − 1) where 𝑝 and 2𝑝 − 1 are primes, find
𝜏(𝑛) and 𝜎(𝑛).
