 Water is absolutely essential for man, animals and plants.
Without water life on earth would not exist.
 Man uses water not only for drinking and culinary purposes
but also for bathing, laundering and other domestic uses.
 It is difficult to imagine any clean and sanitary environment
without water.
 The larger the quantity and the better the quality of water,
the more rapid and extensive is the advancement of the
public health

 Supply water in adequate quantity
 Supply safe and wholesome water to the consumers;
 Make water easily available to consumers.

 All fresh waters on earth come in the form of precipitation evaporated
mainly from oceans, seas and other surface water sources.
 A part of this precipitated water flows as surface water and another
part enters in to the earth to form groundwater.
 Therefore, surface water and groundwater are the main sources of
water for water supply.
 Rainwater, being relatively free from contamination, can be a good
source of water supply. The main considerations for the selection of a
source of water supply are:
 Quantity
 Quality and
 Cost

 The collection system is dependent on the source of the water
supply.
 An intake with pumping facilities is required if the water is to be
collected from a surface water source.
 Dug wells or tube wells are common collection devices for
groundwater
 While a permanent roof or an uncontaminated ground surface is
needed for collection of rain water for water supply.

 Natural waters usually contain impurities which require treatment
 The type and degree of treatment required is dependent on the quality of
water.
 In case of most surface waters the treatment processes may involve removal
of turbidity, color, taste and odour, removal and destruction of pathogenic
(disease producing) micro-organisms.
 Groundwater are relatively free from disease-producing bacteria but rich in
mineral substances and may require removal of iron, hardness, arsenic,
fluoride etc.
 If the dissolved minerals in ground waters are within acceptable limits, the
water may be supplied without any treatment.
 The most common method used for treatment include screening,
sedimentation, chemicals, filtration, demineralization and disinfection.

 A distribution system is needed to deliver water to individual consumers.
 The piped water supplies require distribution networks of pipes with
storage reservoirs, pumping devices, standposts, valves and other
appurtenances.
 In unpiped water supplies, the sources of water are to be distributed to make
them easily accessible to the consumers.
 The rural water supply based on manually operated tube wells does not
require a distribution network but the tube wells are required to be
distributed over the area in such an optimum number of households.

 The quality of the water supplied should not deteriorate below certain
acceptable level (WHO Guideline values), during the period for which the
system has been designed.
 Water in adequate quantity should e provided at all times.
 Supply water in adequate quantity and at constant rate.
 In the selection of sources, traditional sources should be given consideration
for development of water supply systems.
 Construction, operation, maintenance and repair should be within the
competence of local technical staff.
 The equipment used shall be hardy, reliable, and preferably available locally
and the use of equipment should be minimum.

 Construction and operation cost, should be minimum and imported materials
should be avoided.
 The use of pumping and chemical should be minimum
 The system should be planned together with the community to enable adaptation to
local conditions, needs and preferences and to take advantage of local skills and
knowledge.
 Steps should be taken to consult the women, to understand their needs.
 An appropriate in-built system should be made to monitor the performance of the
treatment system.
 Provisions should be made to prevent or deal with possible deterioration of quality
of row water or breakdown of the system.
 Sustainability of the system should be given preference in the planning, design and
pricing of water supply
