Background of the Study

We are now in 21st century, there are many innovations and improvement especially in

technology. The learners attitude toward engagement with their programmer are examined as

well as the impact of technology on learnings like in laboratory room. In Pavia National High

School, It is well equipped to make teaching and learning process worthwhile. The standard

kitchen gadgets are available of Home Economics Laboratory room these include electrical

equipment such as electric oven , microwave, electric blinder, toaster , electric kettle , electric

mixer, refrigerators ,etc. With all these present in the Laboratory the student are thought how

to manage the home in an effective way. The equipment are also add learning experience and

this way the school result is always enviable it can teach us also to be hard working and more

active in Laboratory. In K to 12 curriculum the performances of TVL Learners can easily do their

work in there Laboratory cause of the technology.

Based on K to 12 Education Curriculum the Junior High School, Technical Livelihood

Education and Senior High School Technical Vocational Livelihood Track Home Economics-Bread

And Pastry Production (NCII).

The curriculum guide in Bread and Pastry Production course leads to National Certificate

Level ll (NC ll ). This course is designed for high school students to develop knowledge, skills

and attitude to perform the task on Bread and Pastry Production. It covers core competencies

namely:1 prepared and produce bakery;2 prepared and produce pastry products;3 prepared

and present gateau tortes and cake ;4 prepared and display petal fours 5 present dessert. The

preliminaries of this specialization course includes the following; Explain core concepts in bread

& pastry production; 2 Discuss the relevance of the course;3 Explore on opportunities for Baker

or Commis as a career. In Learners Performance standard are, first the learners will

independently demonstrate core competencies in preparing and produce bakery products and

learners demonstrate and understanding of the core concepts and theories in bread and pastry

production. In Quarter 2 prepared and produced pastry products (pp) the performance are the

learners should also demonstrate competencies in preparing and producing pastry products

and also the learners demonstrate understanding of the core concepts and underlying theories

and preparing and presenting gateaux, theories and cakes. In 4 Quarter prepared and display

petite fours (PF) in performance standards and content standard are same also to others. In 5

Quarter present dessert (PD) in performance the learners should demonstrate competencies in

presenting dessert.

During Laboratory Performances it is necessary in learners to do a such a skills of being

hard working and being a helpful to each other so that it can easily to them to do their works in

Laboratory. In doing Laboratory Performances there are does and don’ts in doing works in

Laboratory. This are the does in doing Performances in Laboratory first wear appropriate clean

clothing on the Laboratory days. Store knives in wooden block or in a drawer ,1 potholders

nearly and use them, separate raw meat and poultry from others items where you use or store

them etc. While this are don’ts during Laboratory Performances, never cook in loose clothes and

keep long hair tied back and don’t let temperature sensitive foods seat out in the kitchen so

that the learners will doing their work enjoyable there are nothing to worry about their

performance.

The study aims to determine the performances and attitude of Home Economics Learners of

Pavia National High School to their Laboratory Performances.

This study aims to determine the performance and attitude of Home Economics Learners

of Pavia National High School to their Laboratory Performances.

1. What are the positive attitudes of Home Economics Learners in their Laboratory?

Performance?

Review of Related Literature

This part present concepts and readings related to the study.(1) Overview of Home

Economics.(2) Importance of Home Economics.(3) Home Economics Learners Performance.(4)

Skills of Learners and the future.

Overview of Home Economics

It is important more learners to know important skills for daily living. Those school offer

courses in line with the field home economics. According to Johnson (2019) Home Economics is

the profession and field of study that deals with the economics and management of the home

and community. Home economics is a field of formal study including such topics as consumers

education, Institutional management, interior design,home furnishings, cleaning, handcrafted,

sewing, clothing and textiles , cooking, nutrition, food preservation, hygiene, child

development, and family relationships. It prepares for homemaking or professional careers.

Home Economics is also known as Family and Consumer Sciences. It is taught in secondary

school, colleges and universities, Vocational school and in education centers, where students

include women and some men. On the other hand, Home Economics lesson teach children and

young people what to do in the kitchen; form setting table to baking cookies and cakes. In

Home Economics, kids can learn about the foods nutrition value, the proper rules of etiquette

and ways of handing kitchen equipment.

Importance of Home Economics

Home economics promotes the well being of individual. In education it is included in

curriculum as a subject. Home Economics help students develop an understanding of the

factors that influence the well being of individuals and families within the home and community

and of the actions people take to enhance and sustain those environments.

In the context of food and nutrition, students evaluate currently issues and theories of

nutrition, Identify and reflect on factors that influence people’s choice and behaviours and use

this knowledge to make informed decisions.

Through the process of selecting, preparing, cooking, and serving food, students develop

their creativity and experience a sense of accomplishment. At the same time, they develop

personal and impersonal understanding and skills that contribute to well being.

Many teachers of Home Economics are also teachers of food technology and hospitality,

Food technology in focused on developing knowledge and skills about the use of living

organisms and ingredients to process, preserve, pack and store products.

According to Buffy Nail Lon, Home economics counts as an interdisciplinary degree that

focuses on the economics of running a household. In the past, those seeing a degree in the

subject, either to teach it or to better run their home farms, took coursework in subjects such

as chemistry, food preparation and fine arts.

Proper Nutrition

According to statistics cited in “Today’s Dietitian” 35 percent of teenager have a weight

problem with some even being obsess. The of the issue stems from the practice of parents not

cooking for their family and opting for fast food instead. Children don’t learn about healthy

foods and how to prepared them in this environment. One of the primary lessons that a student

learns during the course of home economics education is how to prepared food, about

nutritional value and proper portion sizes. She also learns about how to budget when shopping

for food, bringing an additional economics lesson to her studies.

Hospitality and Tourism

When looked at in the broader sense, home economics education doesn’t limit it self to

people’s personal places of residence. Instead, students can take many of the principles taught

in a home economics class and apply them to business. The hospitality and tourism industries

become prime candidates for this type of education. Aside from the coursework food science

and nutrition, the business and accounting aspects of a home economics program plus the

instruction in subjects such as fine art or decorating become useful when looked at in this

context, because these skills can be used to decorate a hotel lobby or to choose the look of the

interior of a restaurant.

Environmental Sustainability

According to a report by Education for Sustainable Development, the United Nations has

declared the years between 2005 and 2014 a time of advancing knowledge about sustain

ability, as well as taking action to the end. Home economics education has a large part to play

in this. Aside from teaching their students about the energy required to grow, package and

store food and other items, students in program such as this learn how to reuse items in new

ways. This can include using clothing and other household items in different ways than they

were originally intended or using recyclable materials when making clothing and other items.

Other Considerations

According to an article by Hannelore Sudermann on Washington State University web

site, in order to get women to return to the home, many School in encourage them to study

home economics. Because of this, home economics develop a stigma, particularly during the

60s and 70s when the women’s rights movement move to the forefront of national conscious.

The usefulness of the degree got lost in the rhetoric of the time., However, people working in

the realm of the home such as Martha Stewart have begun to shed new light on this subject,

making it a more attractive degree option that it has been in years past.

Effects of Laboratory Performances to Home Economics Learners

Laboratory performances are gate ways for learners to learn skills and and master them.

So they can apply in life later on. The Laboratory is a vital place senior secondary school

student’s inter personal and educational development. In all, a good laboratory is essential for

effective practical, learning to take place. Good laboratory environments are those with

adequate lab equipment for teaching and learning, with driven teacher who use standard

teaching methodologies and have adequate facilities. In other words, school that do not meet

this standard my not able to provide good learning environment for proper learning to take

place.

The study of home economics is the study of life it self, which is, equipping oneself to

manage the different aspects affect ones way of living in the home, in the community and in

the society. Home economics centered in teaching the student the usefulness or importance of

the home, the family and the society, and the subject also gives the students a lot of time to do

practical work to prepare them for home life in the future. In the secondary level, Technology

and Home Economics is taught.

Taking a closer look at the topics tough in the subject, it’s goal in to gain new skills such

as the productive and entrepreneurial skills, work ethic and occupational knowledge essential

both for making an intelligent choice as regards to ones career and for specialized training in

one’s occupation.

Home Economics is taught at the basic Secondary School Level ( Basic 7-12) under the

Universal Basic Education Programmer, as an integrated subject, which comprises Food and

Nutrition, Clothing and Textile and Home Management. Olaitan (1992) noted that the essence

of Home Economics education is to enable pupils to explore a vast array of occupations I the

field before making a career choice.

The major reason why the home economics subject, teaches Entrepreneurship is

because with or without Scholl training any one can start a small Entrepreneurship which can

grow into a larger one with the help of family members, friends. Family members working

together for a cause will have more earnings for their daily expenditures, more savings and

more employment. Concentration in their family industry and aiming to improve the quality of

their goals in the event that they cannot afford to continue on with higher education, this

subject in high school will enable them to be prepared and face their future with hope and

positive attitude.

A good laboratory is crucial to teaching and learning of home economics among senior

secondary schools. A dedicated classroom teacher feels fulfilled when he or she realizes the

objective he has set out to achieve for every lesson.

Home Economics and the Future

In today’s fast-moving world, the science of nutrition the study of Home Economics are

becoming more and more important. Courage and imagination are needed in developing and

implementing programs, and in demanding the funds and facilities needed to carry them out.

The article focuses on curriculum development challenges related to Home Economics education

at all levels, elementary thought adult professional aspects of the Home Economics program-pre

Vocational, home and family leaving, occupational, pre-professional, and teacher education.

Whilst stressing that we require comprehensive and detailed training for every important

profession and career that serve human life and well-being, home management and nutrition

science are clearly important. It is evident that Home Economics education has many

opportunities to develop a visionary approach to education for future- oriented sustainable

development, improving the quality of life at Individual, family, societal and global level.

Obesity has become the most common nutritional disorder in the industrialized world. It is a

major risk factor for the development of degenerative and chronic disease and for the leading

causes of death in the Western world. Poor eating habits and improper diet are notoriously

serious causes of disease. Careful detailed planning is important and, with this , Home

Economics will make an important contribution to counteracting such a development. This

article focuses on how Home Economics as a creative subject can allow for experimentation and

the development of critical judgement relating to food and meals. That way it can inspire

students to use their skills outside school and later in life. As a practical subject, the teaching of

Home Economics encourages students to cook and develop a sense of pleasure in work as well

as good working habits, and to be conscious consumers, allowing them to take responsibility for

food and meals, both in recreation and in the workplace and society. Teaching in the subject

Summary

Home Economics is a education has many opportunities to develop a visionary

Participants of the Study

The Participants of the study are the TVL -HE. Specialization teachers of HE. Learners of

Pavia National High School; Who are Purposively chosen to be Interviewed about the

Laboratory Performances and attitude of the Learners

Data gathering instruments

Data is obtained by using Interview Questionnaire to determine what is the attitude and

Performances of Home Economics Learners to their Laboratory Performances.

Data Analysis Procedure

Data Collected from the Interview Questionnaire is Analyzed using descriptive statistics

which Includes; frequency , mean and range.
