PROJECT TITTLE: ENHANCEMENT OF ACCESS TO SAFE & CLEAN

DRINKING WATER IN TSIEKURU DIVISION, MWINGI DISTRICT

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This project aims at enhancing access to clean and safe drinking water in Tsiekuru
Division, Mwingi District through the installation of eight hand pumps in shallow wells.
So far three hand pumps have been installed in the same areas through the support of
Senator Lance Mason of USA and Mad imports.

The hand pumps are envisioning at assisting 2,800 individuals (560 households) to access
safe drinking water, in addition the water will also benefit 1,500 herds of cattle and 4,000
small livestock such as goats which form the prime livelihood in this arid and semi-arid
region. The project will also enhance livelihood through the increase of time available to
engage in economic activities such as basket weaving which we assist women to sell in
the fair trade market.

The project will achieve its objectives through the following strategic activities; well
sinking, desiltation and pumps installation. The project will be installed by African pr-
poor Tourism Development Centre (APTDC) which is a fully registered NGO under the
laws of Kenya.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Tsiekuru Division is an arid area that hardly receives a substantial amount rainfall which
has affected availability of food in the region. The region is a semi-arid area and thus the
major sources of livelihoods are livestock rearing, basket weaving and limited
subsistence farming of drought resistant crops such as millet, sorghum and green grams.
Clean water shortage is rampant in the region and women and children have to trek in the
company of their donkeys for long distances in search of water. As a result of this a lot of
man hours which could have been used for economic activities such as basket weaving
are lost. The major sources of water are mud holes sunk on dry river beds, water from
these sources are dirty and most of the times contaminated and causes diseases such as
cholera.

The project therefore seeks to provide hand water pumps to this region which will
enhance access to clean water for domestic use, animal use and irrigation of kitchen
gardens. The region has approximately 150 households, each having approximately 7
dependants. So by providing clean water, many lives will be saved. There will also be
food supply, as they will be able to irrigate their lands for small scale farming. This will
help in reducing the problem of food scarcity in the region. By providing water pumps in
this region, time will be saved for the locals to engage in other economic activities such
as basket weaving which is a domain of the women. Provision of clean treated water will
also help cub the occurrence or spread of waterborne diseases as the water will be keep
clean.

deepened and desilted to enhance water access even during the dry spell.

b) Sealing and reinforcing the water holes.

After the water wells have been dug, they will be reinforced to prevent the wall
from collapsing and the top closed with a concrete lid to keep the water and free
from contamination.

c) Fixing of hand pumps.

Then the 5 hand pumps will be installed to make it easier for the people to draw
water with much ease.

PROJECT MONITORING AND EVALUATING

A monitoring and evaluation team consisting of four members will be constituted to
conduct monitoring and evaluation at a periodicity of two months. The team will use
indicators such as number of well fitted with pumps, number of families accessing water,
number of livestock accessing water and amount of time converted to economic activities
such a baskets weaving.

Dissemination
A plaque clearly showing the donors who funded the project will be placed on a visible
position on the pump. A video clip will also be developed and shared with the donors of
