INSTRUCTIONS

 Please note this is IRIS invigilated exam. Your microphone and camera should be on for the
duration of the exam.
 Your script must be saved with file named as student no, subject code (For Example:
72111985_TRE2601) and uploaded on assessment 3 platform.
 If the information available is not complete please assume, specify the required value and
continue with the exam paper. Give answers to three decimal places.

Additional student instructions:


1. Students must upload their answer scripts in a single PDF file (answer scripts must not be
password protected or uploaded as “read only” files)
2. NO emailed scripts will be accepted.
3. Students are advised to preview submissions (answer scripts) to ensure legibility and that the
correct answer script file has been uploaded.
4. Students are permitted to resubmit their answer scripts should their initial submission be
unsatisfactory.
5. Incorrect file format and uncollated answer scripts will not be considered.
6. Incorrect answer scripts and/or submissions made on unofficial examinations platforms
(including the invigilator cellphone application) will not be marked and no opportunity will be
granted for resubmission.
7. Mark awarded for incomplete submission will be the student’s final mark. No opportunity for
resubmission will be granted.
8. Mark awarded for illegible scanned submission will be the student’s final mark. No opportunity for
resubmission will be granted.
9. Submissions will only be accepted from registered student accounts.
10. Students who have not utilised invigilation or proctoring tools will be subjected to disciplinary
processes.
11. Students suspected of dishonest conduct during the examinations will be subjected to
disciplinary processes. UNISA has a zero tolerance for plagiarism and/or any other forms of
academic dishonesty.
12.Students are provided one hour to submit their answer scripts after the official examination time.
Submissions made after the official examination time will be rejected.

Below is a sketch showing the vertical alignment of a road section

1.1 Determine G1, G2 and G3 (6)


1.2 Determine the chainages and elevations of BVC2 and EVC2. (4)
1.3 Determine the equation for the sag curve. Hint: calculate the coefficients a, b, and c of the
parabolic equation Y = ax2 + bx + C. (5)
1.4 Compute the chainage and elevation of the lowest point on the sag curve. (5)

1.5 Give illustrated cross-sectional diagrams depicting a 2-lane, two-way road pavement
camber and cross fall. Discuss the main difference between the concept of camber and
crossfall and that of superelevation. (9)

Question 2

2.1 Detailed geotechnical investigations should be carried out once the route has been staked
out. Briefly discuss the procedures used to obtain field samples for the following
geotechnical investigations. (6)

1.1.1 Centreline soil surveys. (2)


1.1.2 Borrow pit and quarry investigations. (2)
1.1.3 Bridge site investigations. (2)

2.2 A residential area in Centurion, Pretoria generates 250 shopping trips per day. Shoppers
travel by car to the two nearest shopping centres Centurion Mall and Forest Hill Mall.
Centurion Mall has 70 employees, and it is 14 minutes from the residential area. Forest
Hill Mall has 180 employees and is 20 minutes from the residential area. A new route
has been constructed which will reduce the traveling time to Forest Hill Mall to 10
minutes. How many shoppers can be expected to be drawn away from Centurion Mall to
rather shop at Forest Hill Mall? (HINT: Interpolate to get the travel time factors for 10 &
14min travel time). (15)
