QUESTION 1 [8 MARKS]
There are two major classifications of bearings for rotary motion, which are sliding bearings
and rolling bearings as shown in figure 1.

Figure 1: Bearing classification

In terms of the design considerations of bearings, there are two groups of variables to
consider in the design of sliding bearings.
(1.1) Provide four independent variables that are normally given, or the designer has control
over when designing the sliding bearings. [4]
(1.2) Provide four dependent variables that the designer cannot control or can be controlled
indirectly by changing one or more of the independent variables when designing the sliding
bearings. [4]

QUESTION 2 [20 MARKS]

A full film hydrodynamic journal bearing is required for a shaft supporting a radial load of
2300 N, whilst rotating at 1500 rpm. The nominal diameter of the shaft is 45 mm. The
lubricant can be supplied at an inlet temperature of 66 °C;

2.1 Determine the overall temperature rise in the bearing. [18]

2
Assume the following: Lubricant = SAE20, L/D =1; Initial temperature rise = 12 °C
Show all the calculations and tabulate your results.

2.2 Calculate the total lubricant flow rate. [2]
