let’s give ourselves a big hand.
Now, let’s proceed to another
topic.

B. Lesson Proper
1. Motivation

The class will be having an activity

entitled “Find to Create”. I put nouns,
pronouns and verbs in the puzzle but you
only need to find five verbs and five
nouns or pronouns and make sentences
out of them. Therefore I will be calling 5
students randomly to participate.

C. Presentation of the Lesson

Before proceeding to the main topic A. Understand the rules of Subject-Verb

class, let us read our objectives for today. Agreement;
B. Relate the usages of Subject-Verb
Agreement in real life situations; and
C. Construct their own sentences using
the appropriate verb to the subject.

(THINK)
Thank you. So, our topic for today is
all about subject-verb agreement and its
rules. But first I will show you some
pictures and give some insight about this.

What can you say about this?

The illustration shows that the subject

is looking for something in verbs and
having a decision-making.

The picture shows that the subject is

choosing verbs.

Exactly, since it shows that the

subject is the customer and the verbs are
the products, it conveys that subject
CITY COLLEGE OF TAGAYTAY
Akle St., Brgy. Kaybagal South, Tagaytay City
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

would be the basis in choosing the

accurate verb for the sentence.

How about this one?

This illustration shows that subject is

having an agreement with verb.

It shows that there are principles or

rules that mediate between subject and
verb.

Yes, that’s good. This figure shows

that subject and verb have agreement
which means there are rules to be
followed.

In other words, what do you think Subject-verb agreement has rules

subject-verb agreement has? that we need to follow to construct proper
sentences. Subject and verb should
agree in number.

Alright! Subject-verb agreement

simply means that the subject and verb in
a sentence must agree in number. They
both need to be singular, or they both
need to be plural. Okay, let’s now Yes ma’am.
proceed. Are you ready, class?

(DISCUSS)
CITY COLLEGE OF TAGAYTAY
Akle St., Brgy. Kaybagal South, Tagaytay City
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

So, there are 12 rules in subject and

verb agreement. The first one is;

If the subject is singular, the verb

must be singular too. I will give you
some examples.

For Example: She writes every day.

“She’’ is a singular and it follows the verb

“writes” which is also singular. Another
example, "Marco plays soccer" as you
can see, our subject Marco is singular
and the verb plays is also singular"

Can you give me another example, Liza dances gracefully.

students?

Okay, excellent. Are we clear Yes ma’am.

about the rule no. 1, students?

Now, we will be proceeding to the

2nd rule of subject and verb agreement.

If the subject is plural, the verb

must also be plural.

For example: They write every day.

The subject "they" is plural and the

verb "write" is also plural. Another
example is "Maria and Flora plan to go
shopping this weekend."
Maria and Flora are the plural
subject and plan is the plural verb.

Can you give another example? We participate in class actively.

Very good! Are we already clear with

the 2nd rule, students? Yes ma’am.

And now we're going to tackle our 3rd

CITY COLLEGE OF TAGAYTAY
Akle St., Brgy. Kaybagal South, Tagaytay City
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

rule in the Subject-Verb Agreement.

In this rule, the subject of the

sentence is composed of two or more
nouns or pronouns connected by and,
use a plural verb.

Example: The percentage of

employees who called in sick and the
number of employees who left their jobs
within 2 years are reflective of the level of
job satisfaction.

We used two pronouns (employees

who called in sick, employees who left
their jobs) and combined it using the
plural verb "are".

Are we clear? Yes ma’am

Can you give an example Ms. Dianne? The doctoral student and the committee
members write every day.

Thank you so much Dianne. That’s

correct.

So let us proceed to our 4th rule in

the Subject-Verb Agreement.

So, when there is one subject and

more than one verb, the verbs
throughout the sentence must agree
with the subject.
Example: Interviews are one way to
collect data and allow researchers to gain
an in-depth understanding of participants.

Now who can give example in this An assumption is something that is

rule? Just raise your hands if you want to generally accepted as true and is an
answer. Yes Ms. Kristine? important consideration when conducting
a doctoral study.

Okay I hope you learned something

from our rules in subject-verb agreement.
CITY COLLEGE OF TAGAYTAY
Akle St., Brgy. Kaybagal South, Tagaytay City
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

Thank you for participating, class.

So let's proceed to the 5th rule. In

this rule when a phrase comes
between the subject and the verb,
remember that the verb still agrees
with the subject, not the noun or
pronoun in the phrase following the
subject of the sentence.

For example: The student, as well as the

committee members, is excited.
In this sentence, our subject is
"The student" and we used the verb "is".
We can see that the verb in this sentence
still agrees with the subject.

The team captain, as well as his players,

So anyone in the class who can give is anxious. The subject in this sentence
example and identify the subject and the is "The team captain" and the verb is "is"
verb in this sentence? Yes Ms. Sheila? and the verb still agrees with the subject.

Very good class. Yes ma’am. In this rule always

Are we clear or is there anyone remember to not be misled by a phrase
from the class has other insight or that comes between the subject and the
ideas about this rule? verb. The verb agrees with the subject,
not with a noun or pronoun in the phrase.

Very well said.

Now, we will discuss the 6th rule.

When two or more singular nouns or
pronouns are connected by "or" or
"nor," use a singular verb.
Example: The book or the pen is in the
drawer.
In this sentence we used two
singular nouns "the book” and "the pen"
and those two nouns connected by or.
The singular verb that we used is "is"
CITY COLLEGE OF TAGAYTAY
Akle St., Brgy. Kaybagal South, Tagaytay City
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

Are we clear students? Yes ma’am.

Okay, anyone who can give Neither the professor nor his assistant
example? knows the answer.
"The professor" and "assistant" are
the singular nouns and those singular
nouns connected by "nor". The singular
verb on this sentence is "knows"

Are we clear class? Yes ma’am.

Very good, okay let's proceed to

the next rule.

So, the next rule is what we called

the rule of proximity. When a compound
subject contains both a singular and a
plural noun or pronoun joined by "or"
or "nor," the verb should agree with
the part of the subject that is closest
to the verb.
Though the first subject is plural, but
the closest subject to the verb is still
singular, there’s no need to consider the
preceding subject and vice versa.
Like for example, "the student or the
committee members write every day.

Since the closest subject is plural, then

the verb has to be plural as well or in its
base form (write).
Another example is "the committee
members or the student writes every
day". Since the closest subject is in
singular form, then the verb would be
"writes".

Any example? Yes Ms. Azelyn? The students or the teacher attends
the meeting.
CITY COLLEGE OF TAGAYTAY
Akle St., Brgy. Kaybagal South, Tagaytay City
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

Okay, very good. Is this rule clear?

Can we now proceed to the next one? Yes ma’am.

Let's now proceed on the 8th rule. The

words and phrases "each," "each
one," "either," "neither," "everyone,"
"everybody," "anyone," "anybody,"
"nobody," "somebody," "someone,"
and "no one" are singular and require
a singular verb.

These are called indefinite pronouns

which are in singular form. So, take note
of these words.

Example: Each of the participants

was willing to be recorded.
For example, "neither alternative
hypothesis was accepted"
We use "neither" in our subject
here, so our verb should be singular,
which is the linking verb "was".

Next is "I will offer a $5 gift card to

everybody who participates in the study?"
We used the indefinite pronoun
“everybody", so we used the singular
verb "participates".

Did you understand, class? Any None ma’am.

clarification?

If none, give me another example of this I will offer a $5 gift card to

rule. Anyone from the class? Yes Ms. everybody who participates in the study.
Cleo?

Okay, I think we can now proceed to

the next.

Let's discuss the 9th rule in the

Subject-Verb Agreement. Non-count
nouns take singular verbs.
CITY COLLEGE OF TAGAYTAY
Akle St., Brgy. Kaybagal South, Tagaytay City
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

First, let us know what is non-count

noun?

Non-count nouns refer to items,

qualities, or concepts that cannot be
counted. It is important to note that non-
count nouns usually do not have plural
forms. We do not add –s or –es to the
end of the words.

Here are some common categories

of non-count nouns. Like all things in
English (and language in general), there
may be exceptions.
An abstract concept: advice,
happiness, health, education, research,
knowledge, information, time, intelligence

A mass: work, equipment,

homework, money, transportation,
software, vocabulary
Now I will give you some words then Education is the key to success.
you need to construct a sentence using In our first example, Education is the
this rule. The first one is the word count noun so it should take a singular
“education”. Yes Ms. Mairen? verb and the singular verb in the
sentence is the word is.

Very good Mairen.

So the next word is “diabetes”. Anyone? Diabetes affects many people around the
Yes Mr. Karl? world.
In the second example, Diabetes is
the non-count noun and the singular verb
is affects.

Unlike non-count nouns, count

nouns are words which can be
counted and we're adding -s to the end
of the words. But, some countable
nouns only have a plural form and take
a plural verb. Here are some examples
CITY COLLEGE OF TAGAYTAY
Akle St., Brgy. Kaybagal South, Tagaytay City
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

of count nouns that only have plural form:

in English such as earnings, goods, odds,
surroundings, proceeds, contents, and
valuables.
I'll give you some examples
Example: The earnings for this
quarter exceed expectations.
The word earnings is the countable
noun and it takes the plural verb which is
the word exceed.

Anyone who can give example? Yes, Ms. The process from the sale go to
Yanna? support the homeless population in the
city.
The process is the countable noun in
this sentence and the verb is the go.

Excellent. Thank you.

Now let’s proceed for the last 2 rules

in Subject- Verb agreement. So let’s
discuss the first one.

Are you ready?

So in sentences beginning with "there

is" or "there are," the subject follows
the verb. Since "there" is not the
subject, the verb agrees with what
follows the verb.
Example: There is little
administrative support.

So now can you give me an example There are many factors affecting teacher
for this rule? Anyone in the class? Yes, retention.
Ms. Charibel?
CITY COLLEGE OF TAGAYTAY
Akle St., Brgy. Kaybagal South, Tagaytay City
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

Thank you. Excellent answer.

And lastly of course, Collective

nouns are words that imply more than
one person but are considered
singular and take a singular verb.
Some examples are "group," "team,"
"committee," "family," and "class."

Example: The committee agrees on the

quality of the writing.

However, the plural verb is used if

the focus is on the individuals in the
group. This is much less common.
Yes ma’am.
Example: The committee participate in
various volunteer activities in their private
lives.

Can you give me an example? There are small houses in the village.
Yes, Ms. Trizian?

Okay thank you so much for listening

and participating in our discussion.

(REFLECT)
Before we end this lesson, who Subject-verb agreement refers to the
among you can summarize the topic for relationship between the subject and
today’s discussion? Yes, Ms. Judy? predicate of the sentence. This means
that subjects and verbs must always
agree in number. Not only does a verb
change its form to tell time, but it also can
change its form to indicate how many
subjects it has. Take note that singular
subjects take singular verbs while plural
subjects take plural verbs.

Thank you so much for the excellent

answer Ms. Judy.

So in addition, the verb agrees only

to its subject, intervening words do not
affect the number of the subject.

How can you relate the importance of Since communication became a part
Subject-Verb Agreement in a real life of our lives, subject-verb agreement
situation? Yes, Ms. Mairen. became very useful in real life. We all
know that when we communicate with
other people, we consider some rules that
we commonly call "grammar". So,
through the subject-verb agreement, we
are guided and we become able to
communicate properly and effectively.

Thank you Ms. Mairen. Very well said.

Is everything clear, class? Any

questions or clarifications? None ma’am.

Okay thank you class. Thank you ma’am.
