What is thinking?

Thinking is a mental process that

forms associations and models.

When you think, you manipulate

information to:
• Forming concepts
• Making decisions

Thinking is based on the
human capacity that varies.

People utilize diverse thinking
patterns to explain the world and
solve problems.
Different
patterns of Patterns of thinking are as follows:
thinking
• Superstitious thinking
• Philosophical thinking
• Scientific thinking
• Creative thinking

Superstitious thinking

It's about believing luck, unscientific,

or supernatural causes to explain
juggling or magic.

Superstitions are common in families

and cultures, such as the idea that a
black cat crossing your path is unlucky.
Philosophical thinking
Philosophical thinking requires presenting reasons and rationale for
what we believe and refuses to accept beliefs without evaluating them
critically.

This can help us avoid quick judgments, unfounded beliefs, and

unhealthy habits or customs.

The origin and composition of the universe may lead to questioning

the purpose of life. Such questions aren't physics-related. A physicist
exploring the universe's origin would avoid such questions.

Scientific thinking

Scientific thinking involves asking questions,

testing hypotheses, observing, finding patterns,
and making inferences.

The scientific method uses systematic approaches

to collect, change, and integrate information about
observable and measurable events.

Creative thinking

Creative thinking is looking at

something in a new way (out-of-
box thinking).

Creative thinking attempts to

understand the world and solve
problems in unusual ways.

Metacognition (thinking about thinking)
Metacognition includes memory-
monitoring, self-regulation, meta-
reasoning, and consciousness.

In practice, these capacities are used to

regulate cognition, maximize learning, and
evaluate ethical/moral rules.

It can also reduce response time and

problem-solving time due to increased
awareness.

Critical thinking
Critical thinking focuses on deciding what to
believe or do. It’s an active and skillful practice of
using judgment to affect belief and behavior.

Its basis are clarity, accuracy, precision,

consistency, relevance, sound evidence, good
arguments, depth, scope, and justice.

It examines the objective, matter at hand,

assumptions, concepts, empirical base, reasoning
leading to findings, consequences, and opposing
viewpoints.

HOW CREATIVE
ARE YOU?
STRETCH YOUR MIND
Exercise one - Alternate uses

• Alternate uses is an exercise that

encourages divergent thinking – the ability
to generate ideas or solutions from a single
idea or a piece of information.
• This skill is thought to be one of the most
important factors of creativity.
• The Alternate Uses exercise requires you to
come up with as many ideas as possible of
how to use a given item, with a limit of 3
minutes.
• A great thing about it is that the more you
practice, the easier it gets, because your
mind starts to apply this way of thinking to
any situation of life automatically.

Exercise two – Survival essentials
• Preparation is the key to any survival situation, and quality survival gear should always be part of your
pack on any outdoor adventure.
• However, there may also come a time when you find yourself in a sticky situation with only the items in
your home at your disposal.
• In this exercise, you will need to find alternative usages to some unrelated objects and come up with a
survival plan.
• Presenting and sharing ideas might become the best part of the whole exercise, so let’s test it out!
