Final Vocabulary List

Vocabulary Unit 1: “Personality”


Adjectives of Personality:

1. adventurous: someone not afraid to do new and dangerous or exciting things

Example: He is an adventurous cook who is always trying new recipes.

2. assertive: someone confident in behavior or style

Example: If you want people to listen to your opinions, you will need to learn to be more assertive.

3. cautious: careful about avoiding danger or risk

Example: He answered the question with a cautious reply.

4. sociable: liking to be with and talk to other people

Example: He is a sociable person who enjoys having parties.

5. ambitious: to be very driven, eager and motivated

Example: She was ambitious, driven by her need for power.

6. moody: someone who experiences wild shifts in emotions, often from happy to sad or nice to mean quickly
or without reason

Example: The moody teenager was back.

7. sensitive: someone or something that is easily hurt, disturbed or offended

Example: Sometimes girls are more sensitive about things.

8. reliable: dependable or capable of being trusted

Example: Ali is very reliable - if he says he'll do something, he'll do it.


Vocabulary Unit 2: “Travel”

1. abroad (adverb): in or to a foreign country or countries

Example: He's currently abroad on business.

2. destination (noun): the place where someone is going or where something is being sent or taken

Example : We arrived at our destination tired and hungry.

3. journey (noun): the act of travelling from one place to another, especially in a vehicle

Example : We broke our journey (= stopped for a short time) in Jacksonville before travelling on to Miami
the next day.
4. package holiday (noun): a holiday organized by a travel company for which you pay a fixed price that
includes the cost of the hotel and travel, and sometimes food
Example: If you are on a package holiday, your travel company's representative should act on your behalf.

5. trip (noun): a journey in which you go somewhere, usually for a short time, and come back again
Example : The trip from York to Newcastle takes about an hour by train.

6. self-confident (adjective): behaving calmly because you have no doubts about your ability or knowledge
Example : At school he was popular and self-confident, and we weren't surprised at his later success.

7. broaden the mind (verb): to make someone understand more and know more about different
subjects, ideas, places, etc.
Example: They say that travel broadens people’s mind.

8. voluntary (adjective): done, made, or given willingly, without being forced or paid to do it
Example: She does voluntary work for the Red Cross two days a week.
Vocabulary Unit 3: “Work”
1. challenging: (adjective): offering a challenge; testing one's ability or endurance

Example: This has been a challenging time for us all.

2. exciting: (adjective): producing excitement; thrilling

Example: It was a really exciting match.

3. flexible: (adjective) : able to change or be changed easily according to the situation


Example: My schedule is flexible - I could arrange to meet with you any day next week.

4. glamorous: (adjective): attractive in an exciting and special way

Example: She looks glamorous in that red dress.

5. monotonous: ( adjective) : not changing and therefore boring

Example: The music became monotonous after a while.

6. repetitive: ( adjective) : involving doing or saying the same thing several times in a boring

Example: She left the job because the work was too repetitive.

7. rewarding: (adjective): giving a reward, especially by making you feel satisfied that you have done
something important or useful, or done something well

Example: Textbook writing can be an intellectually and financially rewarding activity.

8. satisfying: (adjective): making you feel pleased by providing what you need or want

Example: It is very satisfying to know that the project was a success.

9. stressful: (adjective): making you feel worried and nervous

Example: Police work is physically demanding and stressful.

10. stimulating :( adjective): if something is stimulating, it encourages new ideas

Example: The classes look attractive and stimulating.


Vocabulary List 4 “Language”
1. accent (noun): the way in which people in a particular area, country, or social group pronounce words
Example: He's got a strong southern/Boston accent.

2. slang (noun): very informal language that is usually spoken rather than written, used especially by
particular groups of people
Example: "Chicken" is slang for someone who isn't very brave.

3. bilingual (adjective): able to use two languages equally well


Example: The report recommends that the bank hires more bilingual staff.

4. native (adjective): relating to or describing someone's country or place of birth or someone who was born
in a particular country or place
Example: She decided to live and work in her native Japan.

5. humorous (adjective): funny, or making you laugh


Example: Her latest book is a humorous look at teenage life.

6. catch on (phrasal verb): to understand, especially after a long time


Example: He doesn't take hints very easily, but he'll catch on eventually.

7. fall behind (phrasal verb): to fail to do something fast enough or on time


Example: He was ill for six weeks and fell behind with his schoolwork.

8. keep up with something (phrasal verb): to continue to be informed about something


Example: He’s never made an effort to keep up with current events.

9. let somebody down (phrasal verb): to disappoint someone by failing to do what you agreed to do or were
expected to do
Example: You will be there tomorrow - you won't let me down, will you?

10. take off (phrasal verb): to suddenly start to be successful or popular


Example: Her singing career had just begun to take off.

persuasive Example: Your arguments are very persuasive.

witty Example: The advert was witty and very charming.

recognizable Example: The cartoon character was instantly recognizable to millions of children.
Nouns
a short simple tune, often with words, that is easy to remember and is used

Example: She is one of America's most successful commercial jingle writers.

logo Example: The players wore shirts with the sponsor's logo.
a short easily remembered phrase, especially one used to advertise an idea or a product
slogan Example: That old campaign slogan really means that there should be jobs and
enough food for all citizens.
money that is given, usually by a company, to support a person, organization or activity
sponsorship Example: Schools are being encouraged to look for a business sponsorship for sports teams.
