CONDUCTING IN LATERAL PILE LOAD TEST ON 1000mm DIA BORED CAST-IN SITU
CONCRETE PILE FOR GANGADHAR MEHER LIFT IRRIGATION PROJEC- DANTA
RIVER.

Routine Lateral Load Test

1. GENERAL

1.1. The load test for the proposed piling works involving among other things, installation of
bored cast-in-situ, reinforced concrete piles was entrusted to M/s L&T Construction
Limited., A Routine lateral pile load test was carried out during 29 th December 2023 on
Pile No. This report summarizes the test results and their interpretation.

2. DESCRIPTION OF TEST PILE

2.1. The Pile was cast-in-situ in a bore drilled, boring was accomplished by direct mud
circulation method using bentonite slurry to stabilize the borehole. The concrete was
placed in the pile bore after insertion of the prefabricated reinforced cage, using a
200mm diameter of tremie pipe. The general installation of pile was in accordance with
the Indian Standard code IS: 2911 (Part IV/ Sec 2) - 2013, latest version.

2.2. The cross section of the pile is circular with a nominal shaft diameter of 1000mm.

2.3.The design safe lateral load on the pile is 9MT.

3. PILE LOAD TEST

3.1 Earth surrounding the test pile was removed to a depth up to cutoff level so as to
facilitate the fixing of hydraulic jack and dial gauges. A hydraulic jack of sufficient
capacity was placed at that cutoff level.
3.2 A long channel support is provided to connect the hydraulic jack with the reaction
pile of 1000mm diameter which is surrounded by earth.
3.3 Test was conducted by applying a series of load to the pile by hydraulic jack capacity
100MT. The salient details of the pile: TP is given in Annexure I. Load test details
are given in Annexure II.
3.4 Deflections were recorded using Dial Gauges of 0.01mm sensitivity. Two Dial
Gauges are placed diametrically opposite to the jack at cutoff level, fixed on
immovable datum bars, as described in Indian Standard IS:2911 (PART IV)2013.

3.5 The test loads are applied in increments of about 20 percent of the safe load. The
pressures were read from pressure gauge with a least count of 5kg/cm 2 attached
to the hydraulic pump. The jack has an effective ram area of 143.79 cm2.
3.6 Each stage of loading was maintained till the rate of movements of the pile top
was not more than 0.10mm in the first 30 minutes.
3.7 Time, displacement observations were made at commencement and completion of
each increments; deflection observation were also continued at regular intervals
during the period when the applied load was kept constant.
3.8 The loading was commenced on 29/12/2023 and continued till it reached value
13 .50 MT at same day (29 /12 /2023 ). The loading was then relaxed in stages by
releasing the jacking pressure, and rebound observations were also made.

4.0TEST RESULTS

4.01 The loads and the corresponding total displacement are given below;
4.02 Based on table, the load vs. the total displacement curve has been plotted and is
shown in Annexure - III. The total sustained load applied was 13.66MT, and the
Corresponding Total Displacement was 1.035mm. The Net Displacement after removal
of the load was 0.575mm, the Total Elastic Displacement , or the Rebound being
0.460mm.
4.03 The load vs. displacement curve is shown in Annexure III. From the load vs
displacement curve, the load corresponding to 5mm displacement is much more than
13.66MT.

5.0 0 SAFE LOAD CRITERION

5.1 According to the Indian Standard IS: 2911 (PART IV) 2013 clause 8.4.1, the maximum
deflection for safe routine lateral load on a single pile should not exceed 5mm

6.0 0 DISCUSSION ON TEST RESULTS

6.1 According to the Indian Standard IS: 2911 (PART IV) 2013 clause 8.4.1, the maximum
deflection for safe routine lateral load on a single pile should not exceed 5mm.
6.2 From the load displacement curve, it is observed that the design load of 9MT, the
corresponding displacement is around 0.450mm only.
6.3 5mm displacement was not reached for the applied load of 13.66MT.
7.0 0 CONCLUSION
7.1 A close study of behavior of the pile during the routine lateral load test proves that
a bored cast-in-situ pile to the specifications laid down, taken to a depth of
15 .678 m from NGL Test was conducted at +168 .162 m level , which can safely
withstand a lateral load of 9MT.
