5.1 TEST PROCEDURE

5.2 SURVEY OF THE AREA

Initial Survey was carried out to locate the test location / coordinate
of proposed test location as directed by Engineer In charge.

5.3 LOAD TEST ARRANGEMENT:

The hydraulic jack should be centrally placed over the plate with the
loading column in between the Jack and Reaction beam as to
transfer load to the plate. The loading was carried out up to failure or
max load intensity 40.46 t/m2 for test at foundation level soil as per
technical specification. The reaction was given by hydraulic jacks,
details of the jack, hydraulic pressure gauge and dial gauges are
given in Table - 5.5.

5.4 METHOD OF LOAD TEST

The test was conducted at founding level of structure. The mild steel
rigid plate of 300 mm diameter & 25 mm thick was the main bearing
plate to have uniform distribution of load. The test surface was
cleaned first by brushing and all loose particles were removed. The
bearing plate was placed over a uniform sand layer of 5 mm thick
and leveled by spirit level to avoid eccentric loading. The increment
of load on main bearing plate was given by the calibrated hydraulic
jack of minimum 50 MT capacity. The reaction to the jack was
provided by truss.
Page: 5 of 13 Report No.: 0924 Date: 02-04-2022

The dial gauges were arranged such that, settlement was measured
continuously without resetting in between.

A minimum seating load of 70 g/cm2 (IS 1888 - 1982) was applied

and initial reading of dial gauges was recorded.

The load was applied in series of equal increments of maximum

contact pressure 40.46 T/m² as shown in table 5.5.2. The settlement
was recorded after 1, 2.25, 4, 6.25, 9, 16 and 25 minutes and
thereafter hourly interval after application of the load. Each load
increment was maintained up to time when the rate of the
settlement gets appreciably reduced to a value of 0.02 mm/min.

The settlement was not reached up to 25 mm at max load intensity

40.46 T/m². From the data obtained during the Static Plate Load Test,
the load intensity V/s settlement curve was plotted on graph by
showing load intensity (t/m²) on Y axis and settlement (mm) on X axis.

6.0 INTERPRETATION OF TEST RESULT:-

6.1. Pressure Settlement Curve
The size of plate was 300mm and that of the test surface is
1.4m below from G.L.

 Plot the pressure-settlement curve and determine the

failure stress. (The pressure-settlement curve is shown in
Fig. No.-1).
 An Isolated footing, 7.2m X 7.2m, is to be founded at
1.4m depth in soil.

In this case as per graph corresponding to settlement of plate, the

allowable bearing capacity was calculated from the graph of load
intensity on X axis and Displacement of plate on Y axis shown on
graph.

6.2. Shear Failure Criteria

Considered an Isolated square footing size 7.2m x 7.2m is to
be founded at 1.4 m depth from ground Level.
Assuming the factor of safety against shear failure is 6. Determine
the allowable bearing pressure.

The value of qult here is 0.5γbpNγ.

Bp, the size of test plate = 0.300m
Density provided by Clint (γ) = 1.8 gm/cc or 1.8 Ton/m3

qult = 0.5γbpNγ
22=0.5x1.8x0.30xNγ
Nγ= (22/ (0.5x1.8x0.30))
Nγ=81.48

⌀=37.72 & Nq=50.11

(Interpolate Bearing capacity factor From IS 6403; 1981
Clause No. 5.1.1 & table-1)
For Square footing of size 7.2m x 7.2m and Df=1.40m,
qnet ult=0.4γbNγ+γDf(Nq-1)
qnet ult=(0.4x1.8x7.2x81.48 +1.8x1.4x(50.11-1))
qnet ult=546.16 T/m2
qnet ult=(546.16/6) T/m2

qnetsafe= 91.03 T/m2 (For against shear failure)
