1 Introduction

1.1 PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Hindustan Steel Works Construction Ltd. (HSCL), Delhi has awarded a work
of Construction of ROB in Lieu of LC. 407B at KM. 1205/6-8 on Jhansi-Gwalior
Section to M/s Balabharti Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. The work of pile load testing
has been awarded to M/s ME Testing Laboratory Jaipur by M/s Balabharti
Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd.

1.2 OBJECT OF TESTING

The purpose of this study was to have a check on calculation of safe load of pile. To
accomplish this purpose, the study was conducted in the following phases.

2 USING IS CODE IN PRACTICE

 As per IS 2911 (Part 4): 2013, the safe load on pile for Initial Lateral load test
should be the following: -

 Testing one piles, 1200MM dia, 30.0m long to to 2.5 Times the designed
load or failure whichever occurs first.
 Fifty percent of the final load at which the total displacement increases
to 12mm.
 Final load at which the total displacement corresponding to 5mm.
 Preparing the technical report presenting and analysing the load test
result.

3 DETAILS OF PILE

The Initial Lateral Pile Load Test was conducted on Bored cast-in-situ pile with
1200mm diameter.
Following table summarizes the pile details.
PILE DETAILS
Type of Pile Bored cast-in-situ
Pile Diameter 1200 mm
Lenght of Pile 30.0 Meters
Pile Location A1 Side (Test Pile -1)
Date of Casting 01-Nov-2023
Date of Testing 24-Jan-2024
Design Load 10.0 MT
Test Load (2.5 x 10) 25.0 MT
Grade of Concrete M-35

4 TEST PROCEDURE
The procedure of the test was in general accordance with IS 2911 (Part 4): 2013. The
reaction for applying Lateral load on the Pile is taken as per arrangement shown.
The test load was applied on the pile Lateral by means of a Hydraulic jack and a
controlled pressure pump. The load was applied in increments of about 20% of the
design load.

Each stage of loading shall be maintained till the rate of movement of the pile side is
not more than 0.10 mm/30 subjects magnetic base and datum bars. to minimum of
30 min. Displacement were recorded by means of Two dial gauges of 0.01mm least
counts. Dial gauges spaced at 30 cm at a suitable height and the Displacement
interpolated at the load point from Triangle. The maximum load applied 2.5 times of
design load or failure whichever occurred first. Unloading may be carried out, if
possible. A period of 10 minutes may be allowed to elapse between the two
successive stages of load decrement.

5 TEST RESULTS AND INTERPRETATION

The following shows the critical data of test results as obtained from the Initial
Lateral Pile Load Test.
 Design load = 10.0 MT
 Applied Load = 23.73 MT
 Total Displacement = 12.625 mm
 Rebound = 2.825 mm
 Net Displacement = 9.80 mm
IS 2911 (Part 4): 2013 It can also be observed from the load displacement curves
that the total displacement curve is 12.625 mm at final load 23.730 MT which is
less than allowable displacement as per criteria (8.4 - a & b): -
 Criterion (a): 50% of the final load at which the total displacement increases
to 12mm = 50% of 22.2 MT = 11.10 MT
 Criterion (b): Final load at which the total displacement corresponding to
5mm = 8.0 MT
Hence pile of 1200mm dia 30.0m long is safe for its design load 11.10 MT in Lateral.

6 SUMMARY OF PRINCIPAL FINDINGS

M/s ME Testing Laboratory jaipur carried out Initial Lateral load test
Construction of ROB in Lieu of LC. 407B at KM. 1205/6-8 on Jhansi-Gwalior
Section on the behalf of Pile 1200mm dia & 30.0m long is safe for 10.0 MT load in
Lateral.
