SECTION-B

IV. DEFINE THE FOLLOWING (2 marks each)

31. Photosynthesis

32. Respiration

33. Excretion

34. Monocot Plants

Ans:

30) Photosynthesis - it is a process of manufacture of food by plants from carbon dioxide and
water in the presence of chlorophyll and sunlight.

31) Respiration - It is a biochemical process of conversion of glucose in food into energy in the
presence of oxygen. Energy is released during the process.

32) Excretion - The process by which waste products are thrown out of body is called excretion.
Different useful and unuseful products are produced during metabolic activities. Harmful
products are necessary to remove. Different organs involved in this process are called excretory
organs.

33) Monocot Plants – These have one cotyledon in their seeds. Cotyledons become the
embryonic first leaf of seedling. The leaves of these plants have parallel venation, for example-
Maize

SECTION-D (5 marks each)

39) How does reproduction take place in Amoeba?

Ans: Amoeba reproduces by the process of Binary fission and Multiple Fission. In binary fission
amoeba divides to give two identical daughter cells. In the multiple fission, Amoeba divides to
produce multiples identical individuals.

40) What characteristics of Pteridophytestes?

Ans: Pteridophytes are the first true land plants. These plants have specialized tissues for
conduction of water and food. The plant body is differentiated into roots, stem and leaves. They
do not bear flowers or seeds. The leaves produce small rounded bodies on their undersurface.
These bodies contain tiny spores which get scattered to produce new plants. Examples:
Nephrolepis and Psilotum

41) What are different functions of excretory system?

Ans: The excretory system removes metabolic wastes from the body. In humans, this includes
the removal of liquid nitrogen in the form of urine. Different organs are involved in the process.
The removal of urine takes place through urinary tract. Solid wastes are removed from large
intestine through anus. It regulates the fluid balance of body. It maintains balance between salt
and water in the body.
