The Vitruvian Man(1490) by Leonardo Da Vinci

inside a circle and a square with arms
and legs drawn in two positions. The
drawing was an attempt to illustrate
principles of Vitruvius, a Roman
architect who described the
proportions of the human body in De
architectura.

connection between the human form and the
universe. Beloved for its beauty and symbolic
power, it is one of the most famous images in the
world.

WHY DO WE NEED TO STUDY HUMANITIES?

❖ Came from the Latin word “humanus” which means,human,cultured, and


refined .
❖ Contains the records of man’s quest for answers to the fundamental
questions he often asks about himself and about the world he lives in.
❖ Studies of man and the manner in which he conducts himself from the time
of his existence to the present(Martin & Jacobus, 2004).
❖ Studies of how people process and document the human experience using
philosophy, literature, religion, art, and history as their way of understanding
and recording the world.

It should not be focused or confused with the terms :
• HUMANISM = specific philosophical belief
• HUMANITARIAN = concern for charitable works.
