ACTIVITY 4. WARM-UP!

THE MOST RECENT STORM TO HIT OUR AREA WAS


TYPHOON ROLLY, WHICH SLAMMED INTO THE BICOL
REGION. THE TYPHOON KILLED MANY PEOPLE DUE TO ITS
DESTRUCTIVE WINDS AND HEAVY DOWNPOURS, WHICH
FLOODED VILLAGES AND FORCED THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE
TO EVACUATE THEIR HOMES. I WAS WITNESS TO THE
TYPHOON'S POWERFUL WINDS AND RAIN. THE SWAYING
LEAVES THAT GOT INTO OUR WINDOWS AND OUR DOG'S
BARKING IN REACTION TO THE RAINFALL. BECAUSE WE
LIVE IN THE BICOL REGION, WE ARE ALWAYS AFFECTED
BY VARIOUS TYPHOONS. WHILE THIS IS NOT NEW TO ALL
BICOLANOS, MANY WOULD BE UNABLE TO OVERCOME THE
FEAR THAT WE FEEL EVERY TIME A SEVERE STORM
APPROACHES OUR REGION.

ACTIVITY 5. CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

THE AUTHOR IS THE SPEAKER IN THE POEM.

THE AUTHOR VIVIDLY DESCRIBES THE SITUATION AT


THE MOMENT, SUCH AS HOW THE WIND HAD STARTED
TO WHISTLE AND THEY COULD HEAR STATIC ON THEIR
MALFUNCTIONING RADIO.

THE FATHER'S YEARNING IS EMPHASIZED IN THE


FINAL STANZA. IN THE LAST VERSE, YOU CAN SEE AND
FEEL THE AUTHOR'S FATHER'S LONGING AND SORROW
AS THE STORM APPROACHES, AS WELL AS THE
MEMORIES HE RECALLS FROM WHEN HE WAS STILL
WITH HIS WIFE.

YES, BECAUSE SOME OF THE TERMS IN THE


TRANSLATION ARE UNFAMILIAR TO ME, MAKING SOME
OF THE LINES IN THE POEMS DIFFICULT TO
COMPREHEND. SOME OF THE VOCABULARY IN THE
POEM'S BICOL TRANSLATION, SUCH AS MANTANG AND
TIBAAD, ARE UNFAMILIAR TO ME.

LENGUA PARA DIABLO

THE FATHER IN THE STORY ALWAYS WHISPERED THE


PHRASE "THE DEVIL ATE MY WORDS" WHENEVER HE
DISAGREED WITH HIS WIFE, INDICATING THAT THE
FATHER SEEMS UNABLE TO RESPONSE TO HIS WIFE'S
COMPLAINTS.

THE GIRL, IN MY OPINION, DID NOT UNDERSTAND


WHAT HER FATHER MEANT WHEN HE SAID THE DEVIL
ATE MY TONGUE. SHE BELIEVES HER FATHER TONGED
WAS EATEN BY THE DEVIL.

THE GIRL MISINTERPRETED HER FATHER'S WORDS


WHEN HE DECLARED THAT THE DEVIL HAD EATEN HIS
TONGUE. THE GIRL WONDERED HOW THE DEVIL ATE
HER FATHER'S TONGUE AND HOW HER FATHER'S
TONGUE GOT COOKED, AND SHE SUGGESTED THAT HE
SELL HIS ESOPHAGUS INSTEAD OF HIS STOMACH THE
NEXT TIME. THE DAUGHTER UNDERSTOOD THE LITERAL
MEANING OF THE WORDS, NOT THE METAPHORICAL
MEANING.

THE STORY WANTS US TO LEARN ABOUT FILIPINO CULTURE,


IN WHICH THE FATHER CAN BE SEEN AS A PROTECTOR OF
HIS FAMILY, AND THAT THE FATHER MUST WORK AND
PROVIDE FOR HIS FAMILY. IN THE STORY, THE FATHER
LOSES HIS SOURCE OF INCOME, WHICH MEANS HE LOSES
HIS CAPABILITIES TO RESPOND TO HIS WIFE'S COMPLAINTS,
AND HIS UNEMPLOYMENT HAS AN INFLUENCE ON HIS
CHILDREN. YES, IN MY PERSPECTIVE, MANY FILIPINO
FATHERS DO NOT HAVE ALL OF THE NECESSARY RESOURCES
TO PROVIDE FOR THEIR FAMILIES.

THE AUTHOR ADDRESSES TYPICAL SOCIETAL ISSUES SUCH


AS UNEMPLOYMENT, WHICH OCCURS IN THESE TIMES,
CAUSING MANY PEOPLE TO LOSE THEIR SOURCE OF INCOME
AND, AS A RESULT, THEIR FAMILIES TO SUFFER.

FATHER WAS UNABLE TO SPEAK IT, ESPECIALLY AFTER HE


RETURNED HOME AND SAT IN THE DARKEST CORNER OF THE
HOUSE, STARING AT HIS HANDS, AS IS THE FILIPINO
MENTALITY THAT THE FATHER SHOULD HAVE A SOURCE OF
INCOME TO SUPPORT HIS CHILDREN. THE FACT THAT IT
TOOK HIM TWO DAYS OF SILENT STARING BEFORE HE TOLD
MY MOTHER ABOUT HIS FATE INDICATES THAT THE FATHER
IS UNSURE OF WHAT TO DO OR HOW TO TELL HIS WIFE THAT
HE HAS LOST HIS JOB.

IN THE NARRATIVE, THE SYMBOLIC MEANING OF TONGUE IS


WORDS OR VOICE, HENCE THE LINE "THE DEVIL ATE MY
TONGUE" SIGNIFIES THAT HE LACKING THE COURAGE OR
VOICE TO RESPOND TO HIS WIFE'S COMPLAINTS.

THE POEM IS ABOUT A MAN WHO DROVE TO THE


MARKET WHERE MANY VENDORS OFFERED AND
MANAGED TO SELL THEIR GOODS TO THE
CONSUMERS THROUGH THEIR OWN PRICE WHILE
THE MAN LISTENED TO THE VOICES IN THE
MARKET PLACE AND WAS INSPIRED TO WRITE A
BEAUTIFUL MELODY OF A SONG THAT WILL BE
RECOGNIZED AND FELT THROUGH THE EYES OF
AN ARTIST.

KNOWING AND UNDERSTANDING THE AUTHORS


AND THEIR LITERARY WORKS IS IMPORTANT
BECAUSE IT ALLOWS US TO DEVELOP A BETTER
UNDERSTANDING OF THEIR EXPERIENCES, WHICH
CAN SOMETIMES INFLUENCE THEIR LITERARY
PERSPECTIVE OR VIEWPOINTS.

PEOPLE WHO READ LITERARY TEXTS HAVE A


GREATER POTENTIAL TO EXPAND THEIR
VOCABULARY AND IMPROVE THEIR LEARNING
COMPREHENSION, WHICH WILL HELP THEM
COMMUNICATE MORE EFFECTIVELY.

IN MY CHILDHOOD, THE JOURNEY


WAS A PERILOUS ONE: FULL OF
HARDSHIPS, PAINS AND TEARS

THIS STANZA MAKES ME DISAGREE BECAUSE, AS


FAR AS I CAN REMEMBER, CHILDHOOD LIFE WAS
FULL OF HAPPINESS AND IT WAS FULL OF
EXCITEMENT, WITH NO WORRIES AS WELL AS
PLENTY OF CHANCES TO PLAY EVERY DAY. FREE
TO ANY PROBLEMS AND STRESS. I WANT TO
RETURN TO MY CHILDHOOD BECAUSE IT'S THE
TOYS I'VE LOST AND BROKEN THAT MAKE ME
CRY, NOT THE PEOPLE I'VE MET OR THE
DIFFICULTIES I'VE ENCOUNTERED.
