Day 8 Lesson Plan

In erratic motion, we are going to talk about three types of graphs - the s-t graph (position versus time),
the v-t graph (velocity versus time), and the a-t graph (acceleration versus time).

Sample Problems:
1. A bicycle moves along a straight road such that its position is described by the graphs shown. Construct the v-t
and a-t graphs from 0 < t < 30s.

Solutions:
From 0 to 10 and Since s=t2,
Differetiate position to get the Velocity
v = 2t
Differetiate velocity to get the acceleration
a=2

From 10 to 30 and Since s=20t - 100,

Differentiate position to get the Velocity
v = 20
Differentiate velocity to get the acceleration
a=0
2. The car below starts from rest and travels along a straight track such that it accelerates at 10 m/s2 for 10s and then
decelerates at 2 m/s2. Draw the v-t and s-t graphs and determine the time t’ needed to stop the car. Also, how far has
the car traveled?

Solution:

A10 = 10m/s²

Integrate acceleration to get velocity

V10 = 10t
Integrate velocity to get position
S10 = 5t²

A10>t = -2m/s²
Integrate acceleration to get velocity
v t

∫ dv = ∫ −2 dt
100 m/ s 10 s

|v| v = |−2 t| t
100 10
V-100 = -2t + 20
V =( 2t + 120 ) m/s

To find for the t when the velocity is zero(because it stop)

0 = -2t + 120
-120 = -2t
t = 60 s

Integrate velocity to get position

V = 2t + 120
When the initial t= 10 s, then s=5t² = 5 (10)² = 500 m
s t

∫ ds = ∫ (−2 t+120)dt
5 00 m/ s 10 s

|s| s = |−t 2 +120 t| t

5 00 10
S - 500 = -t² + 120t – (-(10)² + 120(10))
S – 500 = -t² + 120t -1100
S =( -t² + 120t – 600) m

The time the car stop is at 60 s

S = -(60)² + 120(60) – 600
S = -3600 + 7200 – 600
S = 3000 m
