Student Name: Cian Howley

ID: G00389609

Subject: Wood Technology Topic(s): Pencil Holder Project

Pupil Year Group: 2nd years No. of Pupils: 20
Lesson Number: 13 Length of lesson: 60 Minutes
Date: 7/2/2023 Time of Lesson: 11:15

1. PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & AND OSERVATIONS

Previous Knowledge

 The students have previously studied various topics like Seasoning, Timber Conversion, The
Life Cycle of a Tree, and Hand tools.
 The students have made various projects like a teapot stand, a spicy rack, and a wooden
boat.
 The students are currently studying the topic of Metals and are making a pencil holder. The
students have been learning about various types of Metals (Ferrous Metals, Non- Ferrous
Metals, Alloy Metals,) and their Characteristics. The students have been learning how to mark
and cut out Dovetail joints.

The students have a general awareness of where various metals are used in the classroom and in the
real world (Buildings, hand tools, signs). The students can identify the purpose of Dovetail joints in
furniture and buildings, (Drawer, Cabinets, and Log buildings).

Previous Skills

 The students can use a variety of hand tools in the Wood Technology room. Their
appreciation of the importance of health and safety when using hand tools is at a high
standard.

Teacher Observation

 Some students are struggling to identify which metals are Non-Ferrous, Ferrous, or Alloy.
 Some students struggle to identify where certain parts go in the project.
This is due to:

- Students not being in class

- Students not labeling the various parts that make up the project.

2. LESSON RATIONALE

Brief outline of WHY this content is the basis of the lesson and why you have selected these KEY*
particular teaching, learning and assessment strategies- a justification for the lesson.

In the first proportion of today’s class, the students will be completing a worksheet on RL
various metals. The students will have to answer various questions regarding what metals
are categorized into certain groups and the characteristics of various metals. The reason for
this exercise is to recap the previous class but also as a resource, that the students can use
when they are studying for the exam.
In the second proportion of today’s class, the students will be moving on to the final part of NL
the pencil holder project. The students will learn how to use the pillar drill. This will be done
through a teacher demonstration. The teacher will bring the students out to the pillar drill in
two groups. The teacher will show the students the health and safety precautions that must
be used when operating the pillar drill. The reason for this exercise is to develop the
student’s hand skills when using machines.
In the final proportion of today’s class, the students will be completing a rubric. The RL
students will have to assess their own work on the pencil holder project honestly and
respectfully. The reason for this activity is to see how well the students can critique and
evaluate their own work.
