Module 1 – Week 1
Grade 10

TOPIC: CLIMATE CHANGE, PHYSICS AND YOU

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Differentiate Climate Change, Physics and You
2. Understand the relation of Climate Change, Physics and You
LESSON PROPER
CLIMATE CHANGE, Physics and You
James W.C. White wrote in the July 15, 1993 issue of Journal Nature, “if the earth came with an
operating manual, the chapter on climate might begin with a caveat that the system has been
adjusted for optimum comfort, so don’t touch the dials’’ but we ignored the instructions,
touched and adjusted these dials. Although measures are being undertaken to restore them to
their original settings, the consequences of our actions; that a global warming and climate
change, will have a long-term effect.

Throughout this module, we shall be exploring environmental problems that are direct
results of human actions and the physics that will help analyze, prevent, adopt to or mitigate
this problems. Dealing with these problems will not be easy; ignoring them will be worse.
Although some of these problem are impossible to address, the quality of life and the kind of
world we want mother earth to be, not only for ourselves but for our Children and
Grandchildren, depend on the actions and choices we take today. This is rather an
overwhelming responsibility but an incredible opportunity. As a noted anthropologist once said:
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful and committed individuals can change the world;
indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has! Individual actions when taken collectively can mean a
lot. As a student of physics, you can take active positive roles in meeting environmental
challenges of today and tomorrow. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
