FABRE, MIKAELLA JEAN S. CHAPTER 5.

POLITICAL SELF EAB1-BSARCH2

Chapter 5. Political Self.

1. Do you believe that your Filipino Identity influences how you relate to and (in)actively engage in
socio-political issues/concerns? Give an example of an issue/concern that you engage yourself in.

Yes, I do believe that my identity as a Filipino influences how I relate to and engage with socio-
political issues. When I was a child, I was taught to be truthful, forgiving, compassionate, don’t do
anything that will harm somebody, and to love and respect your nation. With this, it will affect
who I choose to vote for to win an election, as who I vote for mirrors who I am and my ideals.
Examples of socio-political issues that I engage with as a college student are the education system,
human rights as a woman, citizen of the country, and minority, lack of support for agriculture and
farmers, and red-tagging. All the political issues that have been mentioned concern me because
they affect my life. As a college student, having to know about the declination of new enrollees
for the next enrollment saddened me because all people deserve to learn and study, especially
the children who crave more knowledge in this country, but with the lack of support from the
government, it pushes them back to achieving what they need. The human rights issue has been
going on for a long time now, even before I was born. Now that I’m already at the age where I’m
experiencing the effects of this issue, I hope the people in power can find a way to slowly dissolve
this problem. I’m also concerned about the lack of support for agriculture and farmers since my
grandfather is a farmer, and seeing him plant and harvest his crops and earn less because of
inflation also concerns me since this is where he gets his income. Lastly, there is the red-tagging. I
became scared to speak up about my problems and concerns in the country, all because of the
reports about people getting hurt and killed just for speaking up for the people and the country.
