Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the TLE Grade 8 Module on Electronic Products Assembly and

Servicing (EPAS)!

This Self- Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-In-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin in partnership with the Local Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:

Welcome to the TLE Grade 8 Module on Electronic Products Assembly &

Servicing (EPAS)!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.

LESSON

PROPER USE, MAINTENANCE, AND STORAGE OF TOOLS

The ultimate key to a safe workplace is proper use, maintenance, and storage
of tools. Understanding the role of each tool and the working environment, combined
with proper selection, maintenance, and storage will greatly reduce risk of accidents.
Below are some tips for how to take care of your tools:
Clean, Inspect and Care for Tools
1. Clean tools after each use before returning them to storage.
 Wipe them down with a rag or old towel.
 Be sure they are free of dust, grease, and debris.
2. Look for damage or defects when cleaning.
3. Check your hand tools’ handles for splinters, breaks, and cracks.
 Make sure that metal parts show no signs of corrosion or rust.
4. Repair or replace any tools that show signs of damage.
5. Grind off the metal edges of chisels, wedges, and other striking tools on a regular
basis.
 These type of tools are used for repeated striking, the surface of the
metal head eventually mushrooms out and spreads to form a lip or ridge
around the edge.
 The metal lip may continue to thin, split, or curl until it finally breaks
with continued use.
 This may result in a dangerous bullet or weapon alike.

Safety Alerts!
 Don’t use tools that need repair or replacement. Broken tools can cause injury.
 Don’t use tools inappropriately; you risk injury to yourself, others, and damage
to the tools.
 Use an all-purpose oil, such as WD-40® to lubricate tools with adjustable parts.
 Lightly spray other metal tool parts as well, such as as screwdrivers
and pliers.
 Avoid getting oil on handles.
 Scrub the tools with steel wool or a stiff wire brush.
 Wash them with warm, soapy water, and scrub them again with a
cloth or rag until all signs of rust are gone.
 Dry them thoroughly with a clean, dry rag and apply a light coat of
WD-40®.
 Wipe away any excess oil with a rag before storing. This will help fight corrosion
and rust.
 Wear heavy gloves when cleaning or removing rust from sharp tools.
 Wear safety goggles when using a wire brush to remove rust.
 Smooth weathered, rough wooden handles with a medium-grit emery cloth.
 Sharpen bladed tools once per season.
Store Tools Properly
1. Use a proper storage system such as toolbox, storage container, shelving unit,
or a combination of all those.
2. Choose a storage unit somewhere with minimal exposure to moisture and
temperature changes.
3. Keep tools on their designated places when a job has been completed.

Keep in Mind!
 Use a small tool bag for the tools you use often.
 The tools not often used should remain in the main toolbox.
 Assign a working table where you can inspect your tools and perform necessary
maintenance tasks.
 Cover the table with newspaper or plastic sheeting to protect the table and be
easily cleaned up.

TOOLS WITH SPECIAL CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Soldering Iron
 Always clean the tip before and after using.
 Before using, put some lead on the tip and scrub it on a steel wool. It
doesn’t just clean the tool but it also shows the tool’s readiness for the
task.
 Avoid cleaning up the tool on a rag when in use. The cloth might burn and
stick on the tip making it harder to use over time.
 Do not wash the tip just to speed up its cooling process after used. It might
damage the heating element and corrode the tip.
 Let the tool cool down before keeping.

Soldering Gun
 Tighten the 2 nuts holding the tip before using to have maximum heat
transfer to its tip.
 Never use a soldering gun in mass production assembly. It consumes more
power compared to soldering iron and may overheat.

Desoldering Tool
 Clean its inside and apply a small amount of oil regularly to keep it in good
condition.
 Avoid direct contact of the soldering iron’s tip to its tip to avoid burning or
melting of plastic.
Mini Electric Drills
 Tighten the chuck jaw and secure the drill bit properly.
 The materials to be bored and the drill bit must be at 90˚ angle to achieve
efficient boring operation.
 Avoid using it on a sliding position for it removes drill bit’s sharp over time.
