This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.
Lesson- This section will discuss the topic for this module.
Post-test - This will measure how much you have learned from
the entire module.
EXPECTATIONS
PRETEST
Directions: Read each question carefully and check the box beside the needed tool
or material.
2. Which of the following is advisable to use for cleaning up hot soldering iron?
3. Which of the following produces more heat but should not be used for mass
production?
RECAP
Directions: Place a check mark (/) on the box beside the pictures that shows the
right working habits.
LESSON
Safety Alerts!
Don’t use tools that need repair or replacement. Broken tools can cause injury.
Don’t use tools inappropriately; you risk injury to yourself, others, and damage
to the tools.
Use an all-purpose oil, such as WD-40® to lubricate tools with adjustable parts.
Lightly spray other metal tool parts as well, such as as screwdrivers
and pliers.
Avoid getting oil on handles.
Scrub the tools with steel wool or a stiff wire brush.
Wash them with warm, soapy water, and scrub them again with a
cloth or rag until all signs of rust are gone.
Dry them thoroughly with a clean, dry rag and apply a light coat of
WD-40®.
Wipe away any excess oil with a rag before storing. This will help fight corrosion
and rust.
Wear heavy gloves when cleaning or removing rust from sharp tools.
Wear safety goggles when using a wire brush to remove rust.
Smooth weathered, rough wooden handles with a medium-grit emery cloth.
Sharpen bladed tools once per season.
Store Tools Properly
1. Use a proper storage system such as toolbox, storage container, shelving unit,
or a combination of all those.
2. Choose a storage unit somewhere with minimal exposure to moisture and
temperature changes.
3. Keep tools on their designated places when a job has been completed.
Keep in Mind!
Use a small tool bag for the tools you use often.
The tools not often used should remain in the main toolbox.
Assign a working table where you can inspect your tools and perform necessary
maintenance tasks.
Cover the table with newspaper or plastic sheeting to protect the table and be
easily cleaned up.
Soldering Gun
Tighten the 2 nuts holding the tip before using to have maximum heat
transfer to its tip.
Never use a soldering gun in mass production assembly. It consumes more
power compared to soldering iron and may overheat.
Desoldering Tool
Clean its inside and apply a small amount of oil regularly to keep it in good
condition.
Avoid direct contact of the soldering iron’s tip to its tip to avoid burning or
melting of plastic.
Mini Electric Drills
Tighten the chuck jaw and secure the drill bit properly.
The materials to be bored and the drill bit must be at 90˚ angle to achieve
efficient boring operation.
Avoid using it on a sliding position for it removes drill bit’s sharp over time.
ACTIVITIES
Part I: Read each item carefully. Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE
if it is not on the space provided before each item.
_________3. While cleaning up tools, it is best to look for any damage or defects.
_________4. Continued used of chisels and striking tools has no bad effects.
_________7. Wear gloves when cleaning or removing rust from sharp tools.
