Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Electrical Installation and Maintenance Grade 9 Module on Inspect

Tools and Equipment for Damage.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from
Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge Schools Division
Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership with the Local
Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Vico Sotto.
The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal, social,
and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners
as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the (subject) Self-Learning Module on (Lesson Title)!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

Expectations - This points to the set of knowledge and skills

that you will learn after completing the module.

entire module.
EXPECTATIONS

Upon completion of this lesson, you are expected to:

 Identify the common faults and defects of tools and equipment;
 Inspect and report faulty and defective tools and equipment; and
 Value safety before starting any electrical work.

PRETEST

Directions: Write T if the underline word/s in the statement is true and F if

false. Write your answer on the space provided before the number.

_____ 1. Visual inspection on the tools and equipment, if there is an unusual

physical appearance observe it means there is something wrong with it.

_____ 2. Upon testing of the power tool, if there is an extra motion, vibration or
noise detected, it means no problem on the parts and accessories are
starting to develop.

_____ 3. When something is uncommon with the usual performance of an

equipment, immediate maintenance or repair is required.

_____ 4. Functional tools and equipment are those that are in good condition and
can perform its regular functions.

_____ 5. Non-functional tools and equipment are those fit to perform its normal
function due to impaired and damaged component.

RECAP

In our previous lessons, you have learned the parts and operating procedures
of different electrical and hydraulic tools.

Give ONE (1) electrical or hydraulic tool and briefly identify its parts and state

LESSON

INSPECT TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT FOR DAMAGE

Tools and equipment are very useful to us, it help us accomplish our work
easily, efficiently and faster. But tools and equipment that are no longer functional
may cause harm and injury.
These should be inspected periodically, kept clean and in good service
condition before use.

Preliminary task in inspection is to organize your workshop

A. Classify your tools and equipment according to its uses and function.
B. Make an inventory of functional and non-functional tools and equipment in
your workshop
Classifications of tools and equipment according to their uses and function:
1. Pliers
2. Screwdrivers
3. Hammers
4. Sawing and cutting tools
5. Measuring tools and instruments
6. Soldering tools
7. Power tools
8. Miscellaneous tools/instrument/equipment
Methods of identifying functional and non-functional tools and equipment
1. Visual inspection – at a glance, if there is an unusual physical
appearance observe.
2. Functionality inspection – upon testing there is an extra motion,
vibration or noise detected, it means a problem on the parts and
accessories are starting to develop.
3. Performance inspection – when something is uncommon with its usual
performance, immediate maintenance or repair is required.
4. Power supply inspection – failure to meet the necessary power
supply can cause failure and damage in its parts and operation.

Functional tools and equipment are those that are in good condition and can
perform its regular functions.

Non-functional tools and equipment are those unfit to perform its normal
function due to impaired and damaged component.
Inspecting tools and equipment for damage
Pliers
 Pivot joints and jaws are firm ad sturdy.
 The insulation on the handle has not
been compromised, exposing the
conductive material.
 Its cutting edge are not dull and chips.
Screwdrivers
 Its handle are clean and tight in the
shank, not worn or cracked and do not
display signs that it is used as chisel or
a punch.
 Its insulation in the handle has not been
compromised
 The shanks are straight and no signs
that it is used as a pry bar.
 The head of the flat and Philips
screwdriver are well-defined and not
misuse.
Hammers
 No splinters or cracks on the handle
 The handles are firmly attached to the
head of the hammers
 The heads are not disfigure and not
mushroomed

Sawing and cutting tool

 The blades are tightly attached to the
handle and not dull or damaged
 The handles are sturdy and not shaking

Measuring tools and equipment

 Check the charge power of the battery
operated device like multimeter, pen
tester and cable detector
 The units on the measuring tools
should be visible
 Pull push rule must be retracting
 Inspect the tape for cuts or damage
rule
Soldering tools
 Check the cord for sign of burns and
cut
 The tip should be cleaned regularly
 Inspect the handle if the insulation has
not been compromised

Power tools
 Replace parts that are worn out or
damaged before use.
 Make sure the screws, nuts, bolts and
moveable parts are tightened.
 Other attachments should in serviceable
condition.
o It should be unplugged from the
energy source and stored properly
when not in use.

Electric power tools

 Electrical cords are in good condition
and use plug adaptor for three-pronged
plug.
 Do not use other charger for
rechargeable batteries for cordless power
tools.

Common Defects of Electrical Power Tools

1. Mechanical Parts
a. stock-up and rusted chuck
b. worn-out bearings
c. worn-out rotor shaft
2. Electrical Parts
a. Faulty switch (lock, reversing and
trigger)
b. Worn-out carbon brush
c. Shorted
Hydraulic or open rotor winding
power tools
 d. Shorted
Warning or open
signs: statorgauge,
pressure winding
working
loads, are noticeably displayed and easy
to read
 Check hoses, couplings, fittings and
valves for any sign of damage.
 Fluids are properly sealed and signs of
leakage
Note: replaceable parts, components and attachment should be change in accordance
with manufacturer’s specification. Refer to warranty certificate if the power tool are
within the warranty period before replacing and repairing any parts.
