Zyrele Mae Mercado Tad-y

PSYCH 10-B

1. Meanings/ etymology of your names

Zyrele
Since the name “Zyrele” has no given etymology, I tried looking for the names
which it sounds alike. The name “Cyril” is an ancient name derived from the
Greek word Kyrillos which means “lord” and “master” (Allen, 2023).
Mae
Mae is an English name originating from “the month of May”. It was also derived
from the fertility goddess Maia in ancient Rome (Mom Loves Best, 2022).
Chedeng
As an additional information, Chedeng is the nickname given to me in our
household. According to Urban Dictionary (n.d.), Chedeng is a Filipino colloquial
term for the car brand Mercedes Benz.
Mercado
Mercado is a Portuguese and Spanish word for a public market.

2. Who named you?

Mom was tasked to name me after giving birth as dad was not in the country at
that time. However, giving birth really exhausted her so she asked for some help
from my auntie. Auntie suggested to name me Zyrele since it seemed “unique”
for her. Mae, on the other hand, was given to me as a respect for my other auntie
from the province. This auntie has accomplished a lot of things that copying her
name, according to my mom, might make me as fortunate as her. For this
reason, my younger sibling was also named after her.

3. What was the context or the circumstances surrounding your birth or the time
when you were named?
I was born when the Typhoon Chedeng hit Luzon in the northern part of the
country. As narrated by my mom, while giving birth in a lying-in center, she could
feel the strong rain and winds outside as the roof almost flew away. Hence, after
the typhoon, my grandmother called me Chedeng.

4. How do you feel about it?

Frankly speaking, I did not like any part of my name. I did not like Zyrele as some
boys from my elementary school were named Cyril or Zyrel. I used to tell my
mom that she should have named me something like Jasmine Angela or
Princess because they are the right name for girls. I also did not like Mae since I
thought it suited better for older women. I was also made fun of because of my
nickname Chedeng since it seemed bizarre to my childhood friends. My surname
Tad-y, on the other hand, really gave me a difficult time growing up. No one has
ever pronounced it correctly for the first time. Some even mocked me for having
such a weird surname.

But, as I grew up, I realized that my name has given a huge impact on my life. I
would not be called “Zy” or “Zyzy” by my closest friends if my name was not
Zyrele. I would not be my auntie’s favorite niece if I were not the first one who
copied her name Mae. I would not be known in our neighborhood if my nickname
was not Chedeng. I would not be remembered easily if I had the same surname
as others. My name may be considered as unusual by some but it has brought
me to where I am today—it depicts every life experience I had, may it be a good
one or not—so I think I got lucky with my name.
