Byzantine, Romanesque and Gothic Architectures

Welcome to the MAPEH-ARTS Grade 9 Module 6 on Western Classical Art Traditions

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from
Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge Schools Division
Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership with the Local
Government of Pasig through its Mayor, Honorable Vico Sotto.
The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal, social,
and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

Byzantine Architecture
It has a lot in common with the early Christian Architecture.
Mosaic decoration was perfected by the Byzantines, as was the use of
clere-story to bring light in from high windows. Byzantine’s
advancement in developing the dome created a new style in Global
Architecture.

Hagia Sophia, Istanbul

Hagia Sophia means holy wisdom.it narrates how a magnificent


construction transformed from being a church, into a mosque and what
is known as the Hagia Sophia museum. One of the biggest domes ever
created with 108 feet in diameter. Because of its grand size. It can still be
seen from miles away.
Romanesque Architecture
Romanesque architecture displayed solid masonry walls,
rounded arches and masonry vaults. It is a period of great building
activities in Europe. Castles, churches and monasteries were built
everywhere.

Gothic Architecture

Cathedral of Chartres also known as the Notre


Dame Cathedral (1145-1260) has rich
architecture and design splendid stain glass
windows and thousands of sculptured figures.

to be? Choose from the different architectures that we discussed and use it as
inspiration for your dream house.
Explain the reason for choosing that style, What are the distinctive
characteristics of the architectural design that will be visible in your own
dream house.

power.
