3. In SMK Mahkota, the ratio of the number of boys’ and girls’ students in form 6 is 3 : 2.

The
students are chosen randomly to form groups of 7. The total number of the students is 240. The
same student may appear more than once in different groups.
a) Find the probability that a group contains 4 boys and 3 girls. [2 marks]
b) A random sample of 10 groups is taken. Find the probability that at least 1 of them has 4
boys and 3 girls. [2 marks]
c) A random sample of 80 groups is taken. Using a suitable approximation, find the probability
that more than 30 groups has 4 boys and 3 girls. [5 marks]
4. ‘Pop’ fireworks are intended to burn for 40 seconds and variance of 3. A random sample
of 50 ‘Pop’ fireworks is taken. Each firework in the sample is ignited and the burning time,
x second, is measure. The result are summarised by  x  40  27 . Test at 5% level
of significance, whether the mean burning time of ‘Pop’ fireworks differ from 40 seconds.

5. At a fruit packing warehouse samples of five strawberries are selected at various times
during the day. The number of rotten strawberries in each sample is given in the table.
Number of rotten strawberries 0 1 2 3 4 5
Frequency 18 27 16 9 6 4

Test at the 5% level of significant, whether or not the binomial distribution with parameter
n = 5 and p = 0.3 is an adequate model for these data. [8 marks]
6. Employees of a firm carrying out motorway maintenance are issued with brightly coloured
waterproof jackets. These come in five different sizes numbered 1 to 5. The last 40 jackets
issued were of the following sizes.
2 3 3 1 3 3 2 4 3 2
5 4 1 2 3 3 2 4 5 3
2 4 4 1 5 3 3 2 3 3
1 3 4 3 3 2 5 1 4 4
a) i) Find the proportion in the sample requiring size 3. [1 mark]
A1
Assuming the 40 employees can be regarded as a random sample of all employees, calculate
an approximate 95% confidence interval for the proportion, p, of all employees requiring size 3.
[4 marks]
ii) Give a reason why the confidence interval calculated in (i) is approximate rather than exact.
[1 mark]
b) Your estimate of p is p̂
i) What percentage is associated with the approximate confidence interval pˆ  0.1 ? [3 ]
M1
ii) How large a sample would be needed to obtain an approximate 95% confidence interval
of the form pˆ  0.1 ? [2 marks]

7 Each of a random sample of 50 one-pound coins was weighed and their masses, x grams,
are summarised by

 x  474.51,  x 2
 4503.83

a) Calculate the unbiased estimates for mean and variance of the population of the mass of
the coins. [3 marks]

b) Calculate the probability that the mean mass of one-pound coins is less than 9.45. [3]

c) Determine a 90% confidence interval for the mean mass (in grams) of all one-pound coins.
Express your answer in two decimal places. [3 marks]

d) Estimate the size of a random sample of one-pound coins that would be required to
give a 95% confidence interval whose width is half that of the interval calculated in (c). [3]

e) It was found later that the scales were consistently underweighting by 0.05 grams. State
whether the scales were underweighing by 0.05 grams effects the confidence interval of (c)
and (d). Justify your answer and state the values of confidence interval if effected. [3 marks]
8 a) Past records show that 3 out of 8 customers at a supermarket bring their own grocery
bags. If a sample of 12 customers are selected at random from the customers in the supermarket,
determine the probability that
i) more than 2 customers bring their own grocery bags. [2 marks] bi ) H 0 : p  0.75
B1
ii) more than 2 customers bring their own grocery bags given that at most 8 of the customers H 1 : p  0.75
bring their own grocery bags. [3 marks]

b) A restaurant cashier claims that 75% of customers pay using credit cards. The restaurant
 (0.75)(0.25) 
manager believes that the claim is incorrect and the percentage who will pay using credit cards P ~ N  0.75, 
is lower. From the record, he took a random sample of 125 customers who had made payment,  125 
he found that 87 had paid using credit cards. B1
i) Carry out a test, at the 5% significant level, the manager’s belief. [6 marks]   0.05 , z 0.05   1.645
reject H 0 if z   1.645
ii) Explain, in the context of this question, the meaning of Type 1 error. Hence, find the
probability of making a Type 1 error. [4 marks]

Since z = -1.394 > -1.645, do not reject H0. There is insufficient

evidence to conclude that the restaurant manager’s belief and the
percentage who will pay using credit cards is lower at 5%
significant level. M1A1

ii) Type I error means that the test shows there is lower than 75%
of customers pay using credit card when it is in fact 75% . B1
