Rules and Dimensions in Technical Drawing

In most parts of the world the metric scale is used. The metric scale uses the millimetre as its base
measurement. Millimetres are generally used technical drawings as this allows for precision. A 6-metre-long
beam is therefore 6.000 (mm)

Scale is often indicated. In technical drawing, the scale indicates the relationship between the dimensions of
an object on a drawing and its actual dimensions. Technical drawing is used to convey precise information
about an object for the purpose of its manufacture or its analysis.

Full size on the metric scale is shown as 1:1. Half scale is 1:2. A small object can be enlarged on the paper and
drawn in 2:1 scale. This means the drawing of the object is twice as large as the object itself. Common metric
scales are 1:100, 1:50, 1:20, 1:10 and 1:5.

All technical drawings should feature an information box like the one below:

Common information recorded on an engineering drawing.

• TITLE: The title of the drawing.
• NAME: The name of the person who produced the drawing.
• DATE: The date the drawing was created or amended on.
• COMPANY NAME: Many CAD drawings may be distributed outside the company so the company
name is usually added to identify the source.
• SCALE: The scale of the drawing. Large parts won't fit on paper so the scale provides a quick guide to
the final size of the product.

Circle measurements are indicated with the following symbol:

When writing dimensions on a drawing, do not duplicate in order to avoid errors or confusion. Whenever
possible, place dimensions outside objects rather than inside their outlines. They should always be placed on
visible lines and measure visible features only.

Draw extension lines if necessary to clarify the points at which a dimension begins and ends. They also These
provide a means of displaying a measurement without placing the dimension on the part.
