Lesson Idea
X Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.
☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.
☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.
getting out of that situation. Then, I will introduce the Microsoft PowerPoint eBook to the
students and allow them to utilize the tool. I will observe the students while they are
watching the eBook, then once they have finished watching, I will explain the situations that
were in the eBook and the options that were given. Afterwards, I will ask the students if they
have any other ideas for options to get out of those situations or if they have other situations
they would like to discuss. If the students at any time have a question that is not during the
large group discussions, I would instruct them to use the Ask 3, Then Me rule allowing them
to work with their peers during confusion and encouraging communication. I would conclude
the lesson by having the students hold up their cut-out hands in either a thumbs up, thumbs
to the side or thumbs down for how they are feeling about their knowledge on dangerous
situations and the options they have for each. Any thumbs down would be addressed
privately in either a one-on-one discussion or in small groups, and students with thumbs to
the side would be instructed to ask a friend for assistance.
Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
This activity would include collaboration during the large group discussions and while
watching the eBook. The activity would be broken down into time segments, totaling to
approximately an hour, and the majority of the time would be dedicated to the eBook and
the discussions of the situations and options for each. The students will be given paper to cut
out the thumbs up, to the side, and down and given popsicle sticks to glue them to. After
discussion has concluded the students will be given the opportunity to practice ignoring a
stranger, asking politely to not hear a conversation, and other strategies discussed in the
lesson.
