This specification defines flammability of interior materials used in vehicle which apply to
flammability regulations of each country.
Remark 1: The standards quoting in this specification are shown in Applying SPECs and Standards
list.

U 2. Target Parts
2.1 Target parts are a single or composite material which is within 13mm of the occupant
compartment air space and luggage air space.

2.2 In addition to section 2.1, the parts, the components and the similar of the parts in Table 1
are target parts. (Parts that do not exist within 13mm is also target parts.)

U (2) In Case of Impossible to Extract Standard Test Specimen

The following dimensions of the test specimens shown from (a) to (c) shall be studied about
possibility of extracting from the parts. Therefore 5 test specimens required to flammability test
shown in table 3 shall be extracted.
The thicknesses of the test specimens shown from (a) to (c) shall be same as the test parts.
If their thicknesses are more than 12mm, the test specimens shall be sliced uniformly in
12mm.
If the test specimens of pattern from 1 to 4 shown in Table 3 can’t be extracted from the
parts, the flat plates shall be made of the same material composition, production processes

4.2 Test Equipment and Conditions

(1) Test Equipment
Combustion test equipment shall comply with the specification given in JIS D 1201-1977
“Flammability Test Methods on Organic Materials for Interior Trimming of Motor Vehicles" or
have an equivalent performance to it. Each dimension and tolerance shall be as shown in
Fig.2.

T (2) Environmental Conditions

(a) Test Specimen
Specimens shall be conditioned under the following conditions before they are tested.
・ Normal Condition:They shall be left for 24 to 168 hours in a controlled atmosphere of
23±2℃ and 50±5% relative humidity.

(b) Laboratory
A test in a laboratory shall be preformed under a temperature and relative humidity
respectively at 20±5℃ and 50±5%.

(3) Fitting of specimen

Specimen shall be fastened by 2 holders specified in JIS D 1201-1977 (shown in Fig.3). If a
NO

width of specimen is too small to be held by the holder or if it will be sagged down and difficult
to be retained in a level condition due to softening or bending of specimen by burning, the
NK PY

lower holder can be replaced by a wired holder specified in the same JIS standard (shown in
Fig.4). A front end of specimen, under such circumstances, shall be placed in line with the
CO

holder’s opening and a narrower specimen shall be placed on the center of wired holder.
S ING

(4) Others
(a) Reference lines shall be provided on a holder in a place 38mm apart from the opening
and 254mm further apart from such place respectively.

(b) Inner diameter of Bunsen burner outlet used for an ignition on specimen shall be
9.5±0.5mm.

(c) A natural gas having 35,000~38,000kJ/m3 (8,361~9,078kcal/m3) gross calorific value

or liquefied petroleum gas (LP gas) having an equivalent calorific value shall be used for a
Bunsen burner.

4.3 Test Procedures

A test shall be performed in the following procedures.

(1) A free end of specimen shall be fitted correctly in line with an opening of specimen holder.
A specimen shall be fitted by placing a surface
17 corresponding to an inner surface of passenger
1:
compartment faced to lower side in a 1way

(3) Bunsen burner shall be placed on a level support and it up while air intake opening is closed.
The height of flame shall be adjusted to 38mm from burner’s tip by gas regulating valve. (Fig.5)

U (4) Bunsen burner shall be placed in the burning test equipment in a place which satisfy the
condition given in 4.3(3) above.

(5) After applying Bunsen burner flame to a specimen for at least 15 seconds, the flame shall be
extinguished immediately.

T (6) Time measurement shall be commenced at an instance when burning reaches reference
line A (38mm apart from specimen’s free end) and an elapse of time until it reaches line B
(254mm apart from line A). If burning ceases before it reaches line B, an elapse of time as well
as a length of burning until the ceasing shall be measured.
Note (1) : Burning rate shall be counted even when a flashing takes place; however, a flashing
on a surface newly produced by an extraction shall be omitted.
(2): An elapse of time of burning from line A to a predetermined line shall be measured on
a specimen which does not have the specified length.
(3): If burning does not reach line B in 20 minutes, the burning may be terminated
artificially and a test completed at this point. An elapse of time until the artificial
NO

termination and the length of burning shall be measured in this instance.

restored.
CO
S ING
